I love puppy pads as I use them under hay, but has anyone invented a fabric washable one? I don't use fleece liners in the hay part of my hutches as the hay sticks to them too much, so I just put down a new pad daily with a thick layer of hay on top which works.

But I wondered if I covered an thin towel liner with a smoother fabric, which could let the water soak through to the liner below, would this work?

Would cut down the amount of liners I bin (even though they are so cheap at the moment!) but a pile of washable ones would be better for the environment I would think.

Any ideas very welcome! :lol!::cake:

:D Simple Solution (Amazon) do a washable puppy training and travel pad, 50 X 68 cm, £9.99. Has very good positive reviews. I might invest in some myself!

now that looks interesting - I just realised - does that mean that the washable mats you can buy for putting under childrens sheets at night would do the same thing? I am just thinking that one for kids could be quartered and stitched to let me have four mats for changing - must compare prices and then test for hay stickyness! thanks @7squeakers.:cake:

:hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm: Now you've got me thinking!

it does seem really obvious to do that since you gave me the idea with the Simple Solution ones - just think - one less thing to keep buying and binning! :fog::yahoo:

will all come down to how well hay can be brushed off before washing and also the thickness - if they are thin it would be great as a daily pad for changing.

:D I ordered two Simple Solution washable puppy pads from Amazon and have received them this morning. They are very robust and too large (even the small dog size) for what I wanted to use them for. And it would be a shame to cut them up. I wanted to use them under my piggies wooden huts. I might try using them as litter mats or in the litter trays under the hay racks. I will let you know how I get on.

Cant wait to hear how they work out - I must admit if they work well under hay I would be straight at them with the scissors! :lol!:

Mine are under fleece so I wouldn't know, though I do have the odd piece sticking out from under fleece and am sure it is easier to get the hay off, though it is not a whole hayloft full.

I suppose as they are smoother the hay wouldnt get stuck in the same way - will have to compare the cost of the pet mat and the bed mat and then let the scissors commence their cutting! :bronco:

:D I have had the washable puppy pads under the wooden huts and inside the grass huts for a couple of days now. They all have a double layer of fleece on top. I cut up the big pads to fit and will have to sew up the open edges. Inka and Maya always pee a lot in their wooden hut. I found with the ordinary pads that the fleece got very damp on the underside where the wee could not escape. So far, have not found this with the washable pads, even though the plastic backing is much more substantial. Pad itself feels quite dry too. I am still using Zorb between the pad and the fleece but am only needing one layer instead of two.
I intend to buy a couple more pads for the litter trays. Problem is how to stop them from sliding about?

If you put lots of hay directly on the pad does the hay cling to it or will it easily brush off? mmmmm - sliding - velcro strips on underside?

:D My washable pads have not come into contact with hay yet. But the fabric is so smooth that I think hay will brush off easily. Those in use as bedding are STILL dry to the touch after four days! I should have sewn up the cut edges before I put them in! smileyface:) Velcro is a good idea!

:D Update: Pads in use for six days now and STILL dry! DEFINITELY going to get some more! :tu: ....and maybe a sewing machine!

the comfort nights washable ones are really good. they do two different sizes - 75x90 and 60x60. i get them off amazon but they have an ebay store aswell :)

Sound really good! My only question is how well do they wash? I imagine that since they are so absorbent, they might hold on to smell...

not sure if you were asking me or not, but they wash very very well and a bonus of them is that they can be washed upto 90 aswell :)

Has anyone ever used PVC vinyl to line a Guinea's cage? (with shavings and hay on top) or is it toxic if they go in for a chew? There are some lovely designs and I thought it would be a nice waterproof, easy to clean layer! The Natural Range Tablecloth 140cm Wide Easy Clean All Colours And Sizes

i got some recently to use for floor time under fleece but i still haven't managed to get that strong pvc oil type smell out of it so probably won't use it now. if it's strong to me then i imagine it would be even worse for the piggies. i wouldn't think it would be nibble safe either.
