We have just picked our Guinea pigs up from the boarding place :):) the lady keep the small animals in an outside shed (similar to our garage) and she has warming lights with red diffuser bulbs for warming when it gets really cold. This is a really good idea for us as it would warm the hutch without is needing to warm the whole garage! Does anyone have this sort of thing? How much skill would it take?

I'm afraid I have no idea but would be intrigued to the answers. I hope you get the info you want soon

Would those be the infa-red kind of lights that poultry breeders/farmers use?

Many years ago, I borrowed an incubator and infa-red light and hatched and reared my own flock of chickens.

Once hatched, the chicks spent several weeks in the garage in a pen under an infa-red light for warmth. As I remember it, it took a bit of experimenting with the lights height and a thermometer to maintain an appropriate temperature in the chick pen for the birds. The pen was also big enough, that as they got older and could maintain their own body temp. better the growing chicks could move away from the lamp warmed area if they got too hot.

My brother also used a bank of them in barns when he was game-keeping and rearing pheasants.

Not sure about using them with pigs, but I suppose it ought to work with a bit of experimentation. I'd do some very careful checking of bedding and heating distances etc. first though.

I have a 2 tier hutch and my husband has fitted a greenhouse heater at the top of the lower level. It's great ! It is too high for them to get to - so, no risk of burns or electrocution. It heats the lower level and is like under floor heating for the upper level. I have a hutch cover which I use when it's really cold and I only heat the whole hutch when they have exercise time.

You can just about see the heater in this picture ....

Ah thanks that's a great Idea, would need to find an electrician to do it for more though and neither my husband or myself have any skills!
