when i have Bop out of his cage for cuddles he is fine and cuddles up to me under my chin, he loves cuddles for about half an hour then i let him have a run around for a while. He is fine when I first put him down onto floor and loves being out but then when it comes to me having to put him back in, its like he forgets I'm there and freaks out scampering all over the floor, making catching him very hard. I kind of thought it was bacause he didnt want to go back in his cage maybe, but he really looks scared of me going to get him. also it seems like he has had enough of playing cause he goes into his tube i put out for him to run through, but instead of running through it, he just stays in it. any suggestions? Also in the times i just have hime out for a cuddle, he only wants cuddles fro bout half an hour, is tis usual? iv heard some people say they love cuddles, but half hour is the max he *** stay for cuddles, then he gets fussy and starts biting my clothes and my hands and trying to get off me :( it makes me sad that he doesnt want loads of cuddles lol
Any help on this would be appreciated, thanks :)p

your lucky, i have 7 piggies and 5 minutes max for them for cuddles, they do love free range time too but when they are ready to go back in I put their 'carry box' down to transport them back and they jump in happily ready for transportation

Id say thats pretty normal behaviour - cant catch mine without a bucket load of squeeling or putting treats inside an upturned box for them to trundle into. - :)) - same when I go to put them back:))

ditto - ive got 10 pigs and apart from one all the rest can only tolerate 10mins at most....

It sounds normal to me. My pigs don't mind being picked up out of the cage, but HATE that 'chased' feeling if I try to pick them up from free play on the floor. We have a cage that they can walk back into so they just go back in their cage when they are ready, I never have to chase them and make them get all frazzled this way! As for getting squirmy to go back, my pigs do that when they have to pee- he may be trying to do you a favour!

This just goes to show how much he needs a friend. It is not nice to keep a guinea pig alone as they are social animals and need company of their own kind.

He probably needs a wee! I can usually have Rocky out on me for about half an hour before he gets restless. So when he starts biting you put him back in cage and let him do his business lol.

As for when you go to put him back in your cage, a lot of piggies enjoy the cuddles part of things, but hate the process of being picked up. This could be because guinea pigs are prey animals, and the wild their natural predators would be birds, and a human hand looks a lot like a bird talon. So obviously it's instinct for them to hide, so when he's hiding in his tube he's hiding from you. I would suggest that when you go to pick him up to put him back in, approach him from the front, never from above. Or lure him towards you with something tasty like cucumber, and then pick him up. Or you could put veg in an upside-down pigloo and then when he sits in it, gently lift it into his cage. This just makes the process of being put back into his cage a little less stressful for him, and eventually he'll get used to it.

Thank * all for ** help! Sorry iv not been back on here in a while, I'm getting married in July so iv not been online much lol! He is now completely different when out which is great! He runs around no problem lets me stroke him without thinking he's getting cornered now, jumps p on my knee for a quick cuddle then off again lol and he starts to climb up me when I know it's time to go back to cage! So I'm now really happy with how he is doing and I'm thinking about getting him a friend but not sure really how to go about it. Also wanting to get him a 2 level cage, any good websites? Xx

I was told that you have to see through your animals eyes to work out what is scaring them. when you go to get your piggie out of its cage you either crouch down or your cage is off the floor so you look smaller and less scary, now try lying down with your chin on the floor and ask other people to walk around the room, its quite scary if you think that your piggie doesnt know that your not going to stand on them etc.

Could you also get your piggies to have a word with mine as my piggies just pee on me when they have been on my knee for too long. :))

Yeah it's great he's more comfortable with me now, love having him out! x)
