Amber’s been eating bell pepper every morning since she was a pup (she’s four now), but a few months ago she started gradually losing interest. We even had a bit of a scurvy scare, but she’s fine now that I’m giving her Vitamin C drops.
So, does anyone know of some other vegetable that I could feed her daily to get her the Vitamin C she needs? I have a whole list, but pretty much everything has either too much calcium or sugar to be fed to her every day. Any ideas?
Thanks and happy Passover/Easter!

Hi!

The very best fresh and healthiest high vitamin C food is fresh grass. Because it is not something we humans eat, it is generally overlooked. but there is a good reason why guinea pigs have never had the need to make their own vitamin C in the first place - their main food source, fresh and dry grass/hay is providing it in abundance!
Please intruduce it gradually in increasing amounts over several days to prevent diarrhea or bloating in an unaccustomed gut and always make sure that is free of poisonous dog pee.
Young dandelion, while higher in calcium is also a good source.

Vitamin C is basically either linked with high calcium/magnesium (which you can get otherwise) or with high sugar.
The trick is to feed a mix of a small amount of high calcium greens or some fresh herbs in combination with watery low nutrition veg to ensure that the bladder is well flushed and the calcium is being excreted.
Please keep in mind that most calcium actually comes with water and with pellets. Even low calcium pellets contain more of it than the highest calcium veg, kale! So filtering and only feeding 1 tablespoon

Think I might try to switch to sweet pepper, and if that doesn't work then maybe I'll give her more grass/serve greens with cucumber. Thanks a million!

Coriander/cilantro is also another good source of vitamin c

Try to vary with fresh herbs like coriander/cilantro - herbs are actually a very good addition to a diet and better than sweet pepper. They come closest to what piggies would supplement their diet with in terms of fresh forage and deliver a lot in a small package. ;)
Most piggies love fresh herbs! They pack a lot of trace elements and minerals, too, varying what you feed makes a good addition to the diet.

Aren’t bell pepper and sweet pepper the same thing? Or is that just a weird US thing?
