Hi my pig is suffering with mushy wet poos. She’s 6 yrs old and just started with arthritis. My vet has suggested taking her off veggies for two weeks (as we’re not sure if it’s the veg that’s effecting the poo or pain from the arthritis) and dosing with metacam for that time too. See if it helps.
Anyone have any advice on safe vitamin c supplements to give her whilst not having veg?

also what have people dosed using metacam before? To begin with my vet has suggested 0.3ml twice a day of dog metacam. For two weeks. Then reevaluated depending on how the poo is
My pig weighs a hefty 1.2kg.

One of my piggies also has arthritis. He only gets 0.1ml of Metacam daily. Though I think when he started off he had a higher dosage. I sprinkle some Vitamin C (grated from Vit C tablets) on their pellets. Otherwise their hay should have plenty of Vitamin C, so not much is needed as a supplement.

In the event of mushy poos it is always best to immediately remove all veg from the diet, so this is a good suggestion.
If your piggy has pellets and hay/grass then they do not need any Vet C supplements, as they will get enough from the pellets and hay/grass.

The Metacam does is quite low but probably ok as a starting point, particularly if you are looking at long term use.

What vitamin c tablet so you use and grate?

So you think 0.3ml twice a day of the dog metacam is a low dose? I thought it’d be quite high as it’s a higher strength than the cat one and she’d be having 0.6ml in total a day but if you think that dose is low that puts my mind at rest a bit. Thank you.

Dog Metacam has a concentration of 1.5mg per ml (cat is 0.5mg/ml).
A maximum dose of 1mg/kilo of body weight can be given twice a day to guinea pigs due ot their fast metabolism and this works out to be 0.6-0.7ml twice a day for a 1kg guinea pig.
As your piggy is over 1 kg, 0.3mls is a decent place to start, but nowhere near the maximum possible dose.

Oh wow thank you so much. I was worried it’d be an overdose lol. Excellent! Thank you 😃

It’s a 500mg per tablet. It’s the only one I could find, but 1/4 of a 100mg tablet is an appropriate amount for one piggie. So I only sprinkle a bit on. Don’t really know if it’s necessary, but my vet suggested it since my other piggie (who doesn’t have arthritis) is also having some gut issues, so no veggies for him.

As mentioned above, I wouldn’t give the vitamin c simply because there is vitamin c in the pellets and hay.

We would dose at 0.4 ml - 0.5 ml for a kilo piggy, twice daily of Metacam for dogs, so yes, it is a low dose!
