I've always used soft, short chop barley straw with hay over the top. Wheat straw is too harsh & a danger to eyes & ears.

Barley straw is nice and soft and a good insulating layer, I used to use it for the rabbit's hutch before I had an indoor bunny. I still think hay is of more value to guinea pigs though.

I have read the blog. There's some good advice for outdoor rabbits and guinea pigs. I used to use barley straw from Wilkinsons. It came in compressed bags that flattened and screwed up the stalks and made them really soft. I think they still sell it. They only sell it in quite small bags, though, so not economical if you have lots of hutches or cages.
