Threepigs

I guess this question is similar to the one that is currently below - though ours do not make a noise when they do this. They seem to vibrate or 'buzz' when they are in our laps, completely noiselessly. I hoped it might be purring, but I think it may be when they are scared.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

One of mine has done this, and I wondered the same too. Given how she makes no bones about letting me know when she wants to get back down on the floor , and she seemed very settled and nuzzling into strokes, I've assumed it's an "I like this" purr for this piggy!

Mine do this usually accompanied by a loud brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! If you Brrrrrrrrrr at them they will brrrrrrr back at you and you can have lovely conversations.

Hopefully it's a good sign then. As I said, I had hoped it was contentment, but one of them did it while sitting on my one year old son's lap while he wa 'stroking' it (i.e. poking it gently), so now I'm not sure.

Haven't tried the 'bbbrrrrrrrrrr'ing - but will give it a go!

I have a different take on the noise. Only my dominant pigs do it.

Fleur who is head of my 7 sows does it, along with 3 of my boars who are all paired with another 3. Perhaps it is a dominance thing. I take it they do it to show who is boss and when you are doing something they don't like all that much. :)

Oh! Not good then:{. They all seem to do it, except perhaps the one that I think is dominant. Anyway, not much we can do about it apart from carrying on with our handling of them I guess.

I could just have bizarre pigs...lol But me and Peter seem to think that when they are enjoying themselves they talk away in a low pitchd wheek and when they are telling us they don't like something they rumble at us.

Oh, is that what is meant by 'rumbling' then? I had read about it, but thought they actually made a noise when they are rumbling. Ours just seem to slightly buzz/quiver.

Thanks for your help.

There is a purring they do for pleasure as well, sorry to complicate things...lol mine tend to rumble like they do when rumbling to another pig over dominance. I'll have a look on you tube and see if I can find what I mean will be so much easier with sounds, just off to feed the herd! :)

awwwww, have just read this thread and tried the brrrrrrring at my piggies - one of them is chilling out on the platform in his cage across the room from me and when I went 'brrrrrrrrr' he did it back! cool!
