SqueakyGirls

Wanted to take my girls to the vets to have them checked for the dandruff. Does anyone know of any good vets in Hinckley area?

Thanks

Hope you're all having a good day :-*

Jo

If your gps have mites you should be able to get Ivermectin from any vet,It is now available as a topical form. This is easy to use yourself.

Have you looked at the list of good vets on this forum?.

I have, but they are all over 30 mins away. I wasn't sure if a long car journey would stress my girls too much so I thought I'd see if anyone knew anywhere a bit closer.

Think I may just try a vet near by and keep my mind open!

Thanks for your help though

Your piggies should be o.k on a short half hour jouney. My vet sees gps from all over the country.

Thank you.

Have emailed Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas with some pics for advice from her. I've got some shampoo and melt I'm going to try. If that doesn't improve things I'll take them to the centre in Warwickshire.

Thanks for your help. It's nice just to be reassured sometimes. :)

There is no shampoo that will get rid of mites, the oils in the GG shampoo will just make it worse.

Chrissie didn't seem to think it was mites more likely to be a fungal thing. I haven't seen anything moving either and most of the symptoms seem to be in line with a fungal infection rather than mites from what I can gather.

The vets on Hollycroft are brill, everytime i've took my pigs they have been brilliant! :)

Mites are invisable to the human eye.Is the hair coming out in clumps with white scurf attached to the roots?.If so then the problem is fungal.Mites cause hair to molt but it will be firmly rooted.

Hi :) he he.. Just one thing about Hollycroft though.. When you go for the first time, obviously ring to book them in etc.. They ask you for all piggies details ie name, age, sex.. and when your in the surgery.. they call your guinea pigs name out not yours lol! I thought it was quite funny! x

Sorry, just noticed Mary's post :embarassed:

They are moulting. Amber and Pickle's fur comes out very easily; I'm covered when I cuddle them. In the areas they have the worst dandruff if I lightly tug their fur pulls away and it has dried skin stuck to the end. :'(

They are not balding anywhere though. Their coats are thick and glossy. :)

Think it is more likely to be fungal though.

Yes this does sound like a fungal problem.Best go to a vet because fungal infections can quickly become systemic if ingested.

Hi all

Just to update. I took my girls to the vets in Hollycroft. They were fab, the vet there keeps her own gps so knew just how to handle them. She thought it was a mite infection (great catch Mary H! glad I didn't use the shampoo now!). She has given me three treatments of Xeno 450 (contains Ivermectin) for each piggy; once every two weeks. Amber wasn't too impressed with her dose and has yet to stop sniffing at Pickles!

So here's hoping they will all be right as rain in a few weeks. O0

Thanks again all for your help and advice. :)

Love Jo, Amber, Pickles and Furbie xx :smitten: :smitten:

We use Bell Brown & Bently in Leicester Forest East who are good. Not too far from you, just down the A47. :)

Mmmmm I've used this practise in the past, was not very impressed. One of by rabbits died due to their neglect and then to over compensate for their error, they scraped another of my rabbits skin in several places until it bled as they thought he had a case of mites - he didn't as the skin scraping showed nothing, all he needed was a bath! I've never been back.

OMG! I'm concerned now. Ive never had any problems tho *touch wood*

How long ago did you go to them? Maybe the vets who workthere now have changed?
