Hi all,

New member here, writing on behalf of a 5 months old boar I got about 3 weeks ago. I'd like to take him for a general health check in January and have been looking on this forum for vet recommendations in the Birmingham area.

Marie Kubiak seems to have left Black Vets based on info I found on the internet. Stephanie (Clent Hills) is quite far from where I am and I don't have a car. I have also checked the Vet Locator but there are no vets within reasonable distance.

Hopefully someone has had more recent experiences with other vets and can recommend one for my piggie?

Thanks all!

Hi, I live in Birmingham, we go to Quinton Vets for Pets, although it takes 25 ish mins in the car, it’s a very good vets. Our dogs are with them too and always been extremely helpful!

I think Marie is here, she is brilliant from what I have been told about her :)

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

I had a similar dilema when I first acquired Hero and Bella.

In my experience there are good vets for other animals such as cats and dogs etc in Birmingham. But for guinea pigs I have unfortunately had to surrender to travelling far distances usually via the train and taxi with the help of my relative.
The longest journey was 2 hours in total there and back via train as an example ( not including the taxi)
but not all journeys are as long as this.

I have had to travel, by train and taxi to see Stephanie and Rod Stroud at Clent Hills Vets in Stourbridge.

I did make the journey (also train and taxi) to Northampton for a dental check up, to see Simon Maddock, who I would highly recommend like most on this forum for dental work, to be honest I woudn't trust other vets unless I knew of their experience.

There is a exotic specialist in Birmingham Manor vets Edgbaston Sergio Silvetti, although I am aware he doesn't recommend probiotic with antibiotics. I haven't seem him myself but I would see him maybe if a general problem were to occur. I don't know what he is like for dental work but I would recommend you make the special journey to see Simon in Northhampton for that.

Here is a link to Sergio Silvetti's page on the Manor Vets website.

You can also email him for further questions about his experience with guinea pigs.

You do have to be very careful in my experience with what vet you see, and if necessary try and make the journeys if you feel the vet has the right experience.

As I have learnt from this forum you do need a cavy savy vet, sometimes this can be an exotics specialist but sometimes it's not always the case, as it's the experience of the vet seeing many guinea pigs successfully.

Cavy savy vets are hard to come by at times, but guinea pig dental savy vets can be a little harder.

I really do wish that helps you, and I wish you the sincere best for you and your boar!

Marie has left Manor Vets in Edgbaston, she is now working at Blacks vets at the Lye Surgery in Stourbridge.

Mrs Marie Kubiak - Blacks Vets

She is rather expensive to see too, I think I was quoted as a possible normal consultation fee at £75, but they might be still doing a discount price of something like £30 - £45.

Oh! :(
In the first post in this thread, it is mentioned that she has also left Blacks :(

I not sure myself either, but if they are still advertising her on the Blacks Vets Website, then may be she might.:)

It also mentions she works there on Wednesdays. I suppose the only way to find out is by ringing
the Lye Stourbridge Branch perhaps. :)

Paws crossed we can track her down! :nod:xx

Hi all! Thanks a lot for responding, no ideas why I didn't get notifications of anyone responding (I guess I need to update my communication preferences!).

I live in central Birmingham but I do want the best for my pig, so I guess a journey is worth it. I just thought going by train/taxi may upset my already shy pig but I see I wouldn't be the only one in this situation.

I think Stephanie/Rod Stroud at Clent Hills Vets is the option I'll go for. I'll give them a ring tomorrow and try to arrange a visit. For now, thank God, I'm not in any rush but I want to make sure my pig gets regular checks :)

Once again, thanks all! It's great to see how friendly people on this forum are!

I just saw ManorVets (and hence Silvio) have a free 1st appointment. Edgbaston would be quite close to mine so I'm thinking of maybe taking my pig there for a general check up and then take it from there (basically see how Silvio "behaves" with my pig).

I really hope all goes well for you and your piggy at the vets, glad to be of help to you, good luck! :)

That’s great news :)
Keep us post on how you get on

Quick update: I rang up Manor Vets and they mentioned Sergio as their specialist even though the secretary herself admitted he's less cavy savvy than Marie. I then called Clent Hills to ask about Stephanie (consultation fee is £20 for those wondering, she works in the Lye branch). Finally I rang up Black Vets to confirm the Marie situation and unfortunately, as I thought, she has left the practice.

I'm now left with 2 choices: Manor Vets, 2 miles away from mine with Sergio, that not many of you recommend or Clent Hills, 13 miles away but with Stephanie, that many of you recommend.

That's a shame about Marie leaving, I heard she was excellent with piggys!

As you know I have never actually seen Sergio he might be just as good Stephanie in terms of general health check.
Marie is very cavy savvy as we all know, Sergio might be not as such, but possibly good enough for something like this.
I really wouldn't want to influence your final decision in all of this but if your willing to travel and you think your piggy can cope with the journey, then maybe Stephanie would be be able to identify any potential problems better.

However if your choice is Sergio I would double check with the branch, that the free offer is for guinea pigs also, as it says on the link below that it's only for dogs, cats and rabbits and not for exotic pets and parrots.

Manor Vets Try us for FREE!

I'll probably end up at Clent Hills anyway, as I'd rather have excellent care for £20 than mediocre care for free.

Just for information: Try Exotics Vets for FREE
The offer seems to be valid for exotic animals too (it expires in a month-ish though).

Sorry, they've obviously updated that since :)

Stephanie's a lovely vet, I hope all goes well for you!

Hi all,

Quick message to update you and ask for another info based on possible past experience.

I've taken Guanciale to Stephanie as he was sneezing quite a lot. She visited him and said he's a healthy little fella but she heard something in the throat area that she said could be the start of an infection and the reason for the sneezing. She told us to give him antibiotics (twice a day) and probiotics (once a day) for 5 days. The course finished 2 days ago and he has since improved but not completely stopped sneezing.

Now, my only thought is that he is not having enough Vitamin C, as I know how important it is for him. The main issue is that he won't eat ANY pepper (I've tried multiple colors, types and vendors but nothing helps), so we're struggling to find an alternative that he can have daily and can provide him with the necessary levels of vitamin C.

Any help/suggestion would be appreciated!

kale ,spring greens, kiwi fruit, parsley, broccoil ,spinach once a week, corriander, strawberries, savoy cabbage, are all veg with high to moderate amounts of vitamin c ,also most pellets for guinea pigs have vit c in.
