I've probably asked this before but I'm asking again.. do I purchase vetbed or just regular fleece blankets? cost is a massive issue for me and my boyfriend as we're only starting college in September and finding a job is so difficult currently, but I wondered about the absorbency and if its worth it? I just don't want them to live in woodchippings/shavings anymore, they are messy and a pain and I've heard a lot of bad things to do with it causing problems for the piggies and I don't want that! advice needed!:mal:

It is personal preference. I prefer fleece but many like vetbed.

Hopefully some posters can give you their experiences of them.

Have a read of these threads
fleece versus vet bed?
Fleece or Vetbed
Vetbed/fleece

Both need something underneath like towels. Have you got a c&c cage?

Which ever you go for make sure you get a horse bag, to wash them in it will help keep hay from clogging washing machine. Also dont wash with softener

Thank you I will read these threads. No I've just bought an indoor cage, is that still ok to use fleece in or are c&c cages better, I don't have a lot of money and I don't think I can afford to throw away the indoor cage I just bought for them, I'm in a pickle..

Yes, how big is the cage? You'll need a 120cm for a pair of piggies

They grow fast......

if you want a cost free and excellent absorbent layer you can use old newspapers/leaflets to be put underneath the fleece, which is cheap as well (also Ikea sells some good blanket made of fleece).
I add some pictures of my cage; it is smell free and I don't spend even a penny... I only need to remove the wet spots and put new paper, but I get a lot of leaflets at the mail box and directly from the supermarket.
My fleece is only a large piece of fabric (I wash it once a week)
Under the newspapers there are old towels but only for getting a thicker floor. They are dry and clean

during this job my piggies have their floor time and I hang the fleece out to dry

Ive used both. I currently have vetbed for my 2 piggies but will be going back to fleece when I buy their new cage as I find it so much easier to sweep out and clean before washing. So much poo and hay gets stuck in vetbed.. but that's just my opinion :)

I agree with Sarah. Vet bed is cosy but such a hay and poo magnet. Also fleece has some lovely colours and patterns

i use cage liners, then place vet bed on top of the liners in the areas they sleep most, use a hand held hoover to collect the poops once aday.

I have both but I found the vet bed to be a bit of a pain to spot clean so I actually use the vet bed as a layer (with absorbent layers underneath) underneath the fleece with some puppy pads on top and it helps keep their bedding (which is fleece) drier for longer plus their bedding is soft. I also cut one of the vet bed up and use it for lap time and the piggies seem to like lap time a little better now they have something snuggly to lay on.

It's definately personal choice. I prefer vet bed, I find it much easier to poo pick. I give mine a good shake and a brush off with a stiff brush outside before washing. I find it much harder to get hay and especially hair off of the fleece pee pads I use in the hides and wee corners. I have found the best way to get hay off fleece is to run a damp rubber glove over it (put the glove on) this makes the hair clump. I would suggest using a cheap fleece blanket to start with and see how you get on with it.

I've used both. Used vet bed for about a year and then tried fleece liners. I prefer fleece liners. For the vet bed I used a hand held hoover to poop scoop so this wasn't a problem, I just found it very bulky to wash as it is very thick, and then if you don't brush it after washing it doesn't stay nice and fluffy and kinda starts to mat together, so that was another time consuming thing. I also like the bright colours you get with fleece. The piggies did love the vet bed tho! Lol. You could always get little cut offs of vet bed and place under hides etc if you wanted to use both x

Yes Spike what did you do to that carrot cottage!IMG_3209.webp

The green is the very heavy weight rubber backed type. The grey is the lighter green back which I used to use. I prefer the rubber back as the weight holds it in place on the newspaper I use underneath as the absorbant layer, I found the lighter stuff slid around a lot (as did fleece blankets) when they did zoomies. Hope this helps.
