Hello

I have just started to use vetbed and I totally love it and so do the pigs however I am having real problems cleaning it :(

Before washing it I gave it a total hoover to remove all the poos and bits of hay then popped it into the washing machine. I have now washed it three times and I still can't get it cleaned mallethead !

So want to use this as my main type of bedding but I just don't know what to do to get it totally clean, please help me ")

what are you wahsing it with?

what do you mean not clean?

:)

I washed it with standard washing powder

It still has mushed in poos/food in the fibers

i wash mine with non bio powder on a 40degree wash with a bit of white vinegar in the softner part of the washing machine and it all comes out.

i usually try to either hoover or brush out all the mushed up poos first. hope it helps :)

I had given it a pretty through hoover, I will try the vinegar next time.

Hi Romily, I have had the same bits of vet bed for over ayear and the way I get mine really clean is to get on my hands and knees and brush all the hay, poops off with a dustpan and brush and then shake of any excess outside into the bin, If you use some elbow grease it will come off before you put it in the washing machine. I do this every morning religously so I'm kind off expert vet bed cleaner :))

Maybe the hoover is mushing all the poos in, making it harder to wash.
I pick all the poos off by hand several times a day and then give it a good shake in the garden before putting it in the machine. So there is hardly any hay or poo left when it goes in the wash.
Mind you I don't use vet bed in their cages, only in their sleeping corners so it doesn't get that much hay on it in the first place.
The vinegar is great, really gets the smell out!

It's natural for hay to stick to the vetbed and if you want it completely hay free you're gonna have to devote a lot of time to it. The washing machine can only do so much... I'm a little lazy and my vetbed usually has some hay and seeds stuck in it at all times. It's still clean (I usually wash it at 60 degrees) it's just got some bits stuck to it. That the washing machine doesn't get poo and mushed veggies sound odd though... Do you think maybe you're stuffing the machine too full? Try doing a little smaller load and see if the results are better.

I use vinegar too, but it only helps with the smell, it won't make a difference to stuck poos.

Vinegar sounds a good idea, will try that next time too. White vinegar or doesn't it matter?
