The group of reprobates are off to the vets a week today...:x

It is the first time they will be picked up by me since i have got them... So i am expecting lots of squeaking and scrambling and chasing round.... :))

Then the vet is going to show me how to clip their toenails and give them a health check...

Weirdly i am quite looking forward to it because i know once i have picked them up and done the feet once, i can do it again... Just need that first time!

Good thoughts needed for the piggie rangling next week! I might get a lasso....;):(|)

good luck with trying to catch them ready for the vets lol. Why have you not picked them up? (sorry being nosy lol)

There is really nothing to worry about with picking them up. Just take the plunge, use a towel if you have to. It's vary rare for them to bite.

I know it is easy for me to say but I was the same at first. They would happily not let you pick them up ever, but you need to show them who is boss and the sooner you do it the sooner they will gain your trust. :)

very true Louise!

Good luck at the vets and hope all goes well - I cut my piggies toe nails since i was a young girl at the age of 8 or 9. i never did it wrong and never made them bleed! you will be fine!

Yep i completely agree... I was the same with rabbits until i picked them up and since then i can do anything with them...

Its just the initial pick up thats the thing... but i know i can do it...

Linz the reason i havent picked them up yet is because they were extremely nervous when they got here... they have taken a good while to settle and one is fine with a little tickle under the chin and my hand in the cage but two are still nervous and one runs whenever i am near which i have to admit defeat on and she will always be the most nervous and wont change...
I wanted to give them a chance to settle and once i have the vet show me how to do their nails etc and i get over the scrambling etc and realise that most piggies will protest at being picked up then it will be no problem handling them!

Oh yeah they do protest, Duke who ive had since he was born is soooo used to me yet i try and get him out he does a marathon around his cage before he lets me pick him up! lol and lois who is 6 1/2 yrs old is the same but once they are out the cage they are fine!

Cutting toe nails is easy, best thing is to have someone holding them so you have both hands free to do the nails.. one of my sows wheeks before i have even cut the nail lol little drama queen! i litterally had her paw resting on one of my fingers it was quite funny! lol

good luck at the vets :)

Bless her...:))

I am in no doubt i will get protests galore when i start doing it but i wish i had someone to hold them! My housemate isnt great with small animals but i may have a chance to get her used to them finally!

I once saw on pet rescue a woman bathing a guinea pig and she just popped her from hand to hand, plonked her in, gave her a scrub and literally squeezed her dry!
The piggy was just letting it all happen :))... Now why cant I have one of them piggies...:))

All my 3 are still hand shy and wont be stroked but i am determined now that they will be picked up and stroked come hell or high water!

lol at squeezed dry sorry but that made me laugh the way you said it. Just give them time before you know it they will want cuddles and as for the picking up ive had freddy for over a year now and he is a big piggy but at times i still struggle to catch him. We also picked up a baby on sunday who is still nervous and god does he take some chasing him around lol
