Hello I have been taking my 3 and a half year old piggy to the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton regularly for his teeth. When I last went they advised booking an appointment for in 6 weeks. It has now only been 3 weeks today and last night he started showing symptoms his teeth are causing him pain again and need burring. My local vets I took him twice before I gave up and took him to Northampton. (I live in Coventry).
This morning I called the vets in Northampton and they are fully booked and then the vets that specialise in teeth are off next week and the earliest appointment is August 11th 😓😭 2 weeks away. I am heartbroken and very worried for my little guy, how likely is he to make it 2 weeks being syringe fed? Is 3 weekly teeth burring very stressful for a piggy? I am so worried and I am looking are there any other vets that are able to do teeth burring as well as this vets? I have never seen any other recommendation. I called my local vets asking would it be possible to get painkillers but because he has been transferred to another vets they can't and if I transfer him back he would also lose that appointment and we'd wait longer.
I am just so worried and sad I can't focus at work as I am constantly thinking and asking my husband how is he.

Will he be okay to be syringe fed for 2 weeks?

I’m so sorry you’re in such a difficult position. I don’t know if 2 weeks is okay but I would book the appointment. With regards to a local vet to do the teeth, I’m not sure whether there are any there. Hopefully someone with knowledge if the area will be able to help you out.

Could you email the cat and rabbit clinic and ask for some urgent advice as to whether they feel he needs to be seen sooner? They may also be able to prescribe pain relief and get it posted to you (for delivery costs) as your current vets isn't able to help without you losing the appointment

Hi and welcome

Holidays are always difficult to manage at the C&R but if Simon and Kim Maddock didn't have regular breaks, they couldn't be around for long without suffering a burnout. This summer, they are taking several shorter breaks.

Guinea pigs can live for months on syringe feeding only. Make sure that you also feed your piggy as much soft fresh grass for as long as possible to help the molar teeth grind on the silica in grass/hay fibre.
Here is our comprehensive and practical guide with videos and pictures that addresses all the little and large questions and the little tricks and tips on how to manage best for as long as needed around the whole field of medicating and feeding support: All About Syringe Feeding and Medicating Guinea Pigs with Videos and Pictures

If you really struggle over the coming month, please contact the clinic again and ask for their advice to see whether they can fit you in sooner.

All the best.

PS: I am in the same boat as you re. holiday boarder with a dental issue who I have to wait for nearly 5 weeks now until the next check-up as my next appointment has had to be moved back another week because Simon and Kim are away on the initially scheduled day. If there is a major deterioration in the meantime, I will contact the clinic.

Simon and Kim are only off for a week. There will be emergency appointments released each morning at 8am , so if you ring on Monday 8th August, dead on 8 am, you should get an appointment that day.

Mod addition: Emergency slots are only open to already registered clients of the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic on the day. With the off-and-on holiday situation this month, you may want to make sure that Simon and Kim are actually working at the clinic on that day and may to want speak to the receptionist sooner in order to spare yourself some avoidable stress.
