Hi everyone, now, math is not my best subject but I almost just bought a 3m roll of vet bed to do my new 5x2 c&c cage. I went for a roll so I'd have enough to get two pieces for one cage, ie while ones washing the other can be used. I just stopped to recalculate if there would be enough to get two bits from a 3m roll and I don't think there will be, it'll almost do it I'll be short by just a little bit.

Is that right and if so, can you get 4m rolls? I fear it's going to get expensive if I need four 5x2 pieces of vet bed for 2 cages! Help! :{

Vetbed is expensive at first but pays for itself in the long run.

Have you tried fleece as an alternative?

I've just switched to fleece from vetbed and must say its much better and cheaper.

I found that the vetbed without the anti slip backing is cheaper and works better than alternative vetbed.

Have you tried eBay?

I've tried fleece and towels before but I just didn't get on with it. I found the towels were smelly and was constantly changing, I like the idea of vet bed as its just one thing to to stick in the wash!

The vet bed I'm looking at is on eBay and the green backed type (I heard the anti slip isn't as good at wicking?) it's £42 inc postage for 3x1.5 meters which is the cheapest I've found and it's going to be only 9.5in out! :(

I wouldn't mind fleece if I could have it in cage liner form but I've never sewn in my life and it will be expensive to get four 5x2 made for me. I'm thinking now I could have a "hay room" on the end but I need to see if I've got enough correx left over to make it. It's such a shame, I went with the bigger size so the girls would have more space, if I'd gone with standard 4x2 it would of fitted! grrrr

With vet bed you still need something to soak the urine. The vetbed wicks it through and stays dry on top and then whatever is at the bottom soaks it.

I used vetbed and towels with a layer of newspaper under that.

The biggest reason for me moving to fleece was the cost. The pigs used to eat vetbed and I ended up changing it every couple of months.

Dog shops are usually good for vetbed I got my last lot from crufts.

You can put down more than 1 piece of vetbed. Pieces butt together so well that you can't even see the join. I've had both rubber backed and green backed. They both worked equally well at keeping piggies dry, but the rubber backed eventually started losing bits of the rubber all over the place after repeated washings.

You do need something under the vetbed as vetbed does work like fleece in that it wicks moisture down below and the wee ends up on whatever is below the vetbed. I use washable waterproof terry towelling mattress protector underneath my vetbed. It can be cut to size without fraying.

Ah I wasnt aware I needed something underneath the vet bed, thanks. I've got a waterproof mattress protector I don't use anymore, will any one do if it's under the vet bed?
I could join the pieces up I suppose but my girls are little tunnellers, I reckon they'd probably find a way to get under it if it wasn't just one piece!

Yes any waterproof mattress protector should do the job. It's purpose is really to protect the surface that the vet bed is on. You don't have to use anything under the vetbed if the undersurface does not need protection.

The vetbed protects the piggies from wetness.

The vetbed is quite heavy and not easy to tunnel under. One of my piggies is a tunneler but the vetbed is beyond his abilities.

Mine managed to get underneath the vetted another reason I changed to fleece.

Just a thought, if you weren't too bothered by the colour of the fleece I might be able to make cage liners for you for cheaper than the vet bed. I say 'might' because I'm not sure how much cheaper it would be though, I'd need measurements to work it out and to double check cost of materials and P&P.

Oh thank you, that's really nice :) unfortunately I am very particular about what i have. I think I have a problem lol. I was going for a pink/white floral/vintage type cage for my girlies. The down falls of being a perfectionist, it takes me ten times longer to finish a project than everyone else mallethead
Thank you so much for the offer though, that's really sweet.

I think I may bunch up vet bed together and have a 1x1 hay room, I haven't decided yet though, it's so hard, argh!

I put a piece of vetbed down that is 1 grid smaller than the cage then use it as a boxed off hay area.

I tried the cheaper stuff once, which I picked up off Google, but it was terrible. I agree with the earlier poster who said that while (the proper or original) VetBed is more expensive you definitely get what you pay for and is a good investment long-term.

I think I may get a cage liner now? How much roughly to get two 5x2s made up? Would it be cheaper than buying enough vet bed? If its too much do you think I could make one? I've got no experience of sewing but I'd give it a go!

Does Vet Bed help with the smell? Am thinking cause it pulls the wee through the smell will be contained.
