Hi

I've been reading the posts about different types of bedding and wonder if someone would be kind enough to advise me please? I normally buy fitch, but it's currently out of stock at the size I buy and the smaller sizes are so expensive - have just paid £21 for 8KG. Ordered Carefresh instead and was shocked how little of that arrived for over £7 - it won't even do the bedroom of our large hutch once. Sawdust irritates me and don't think Alf is good with it either, so I'm wondering about vet bed and would appreciate feedback on the following queries:

- Do your guinea pigs chew vet bed?
- Can I put a thin layer of fitch on top of it in the toilet areas to help absorb pee?
- With the horse hair bag, how do you get that clean of hay/hair? Can you use a tied up pillow case instead?
- Does newspaper work underneath the vet bed to absorb the wee?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Bridget

I use vet bed in Bill and Ted’s bed. Ted has a tendency to wee in his sleep and the vet bed is really good for wicking away the wee. It always feels lovely and dry and it’s soft, springing and nice and warm. I put newspaper underneath and it wicks through really well.

The rest of their cage is newspaper and hay, you will need a stiff hair brush to get the hay and hay seeds out of it which is a bit of a pain to be honest. I use a tied pillow case to wash it in. I like it overall.

The absorbant layer goes underneath vet bed. I use fleece in my hutches... But I have an elderly sow who is starting to get sore paws. I have started putting vet bed on top of the fleece and her paws are much better now.

I also use vet bed inside cardboard boxes for hideys

Petware washbags are great! I just shake them after using them and any stray hairs come off easily.

I have never seen my guineas chew vet bed

I use vet bed, just purchased some new patterns from eBay (I don't get the super expensive stuff!).

I use towels underneath, spot clean daily and wash weekly. I find the vet bed dries really quickly, just hanging, which is great! I use a rubber fabric brush from Sainsbury's to brush it over every evening, it doesn't take too long. My boys both love it, it stays soft for ages, washes well at 30 and stays dry on top. It also comes in numerous colours and patterns!

Thank you. The rubber fabric brush is a good idea. I've ordered some vet bed based on the recommendations here - but had a fair bit of interference from a nosey rodent when measuring up the hutch for a new carpet ;)

Haha! My boys love it when the tape measure comes out...!

Their reaction when you put them in on it should be priceless, even my lazy lump Gibson popcorns on new stuff!

you will not regret it,i use the green backed vetbed as it copes with the pee better, able to wash at 60 degrees.the brush is an excellent idea !:agr: with the above poster piggies will popcorn ! it dries within an hour, even outside on a cool day.:)

I’m going to look out for that rubber brush, it might work better than an old hair brush. I have the green backed type, it’s excellent.

Thanks everyone. It's the green backed official stuff that I've ordered. Thing is, I have the world's most delinquent rodent and I don't know quite what he'll do to cause havoc with it, somehow he always comes up with something that I haven't thought of, but if there's a way to be a pest he's guaranteed to find it!

Quite update: I've just tried the vet bed and within five minutes Alf had tried to chew it (hopefully he'll get bored of that), tried to burrow underneath and rolled around on top of it so excited that he farted and stank the place out!

:D:lol::lol!: That is fantastic! Bless Alf and his happy, trumpy self!

FYI the brush is this one: Sainsbury's. I didn't realise it was actually called a Pet Hair Furniture brush! It works a treat though!

Thank you. We've got a Sainsbury's near here, so I'll pop in to try to get one. Much appreciated.
