Has anyone used vet bed in their piggy cage and if so what is your opinion of it?
I am moving house and will not have a much money so was thinking it might be cheaper than buying sawdust all the time, not to mention not having to find the space to store the sawdust.
I have used fleece in the past but it got really smelly really quickly with two boys, who drink and pee an awful lot.
How often do people find they have to change them out when using vet bed?
Thanks

I swear by it after trying everything :))
Depending on how many piggies you have together, vet bed can be left for 5-7 days I find for 2 piggies.
I have a herd of six girls who need changing at least twice a week but the pairs of piggies can be done less often.
I use this company:

Have recently ordered two rolls of the white to do all of the pens a snow theme for Christmas with little hanging stockings, icicle lights etc. etc. mallethead :(|)

Hi, I've been using vetbed for a couple of months. It is really soft and drains well so keeps the piggies dry and comfy. I use puppy pads under it to absorb the wee, you could use newspaper or towels. I have 2 boars in a 4' x 4' cage and I change the bedding twice a week. You have to brush the vetbed thoroughly with a stiff brush to get the hair and hay out before washing, then I wash at 60 degrees in non-bio (apparently bio can damage the latex backing). It is stiff to start with but softens after a few washes, and I can just about fit a 4' x 4' piece in an 8 kg load washer!

HTH :)

That sounds lovely and thanks for the link - I have just put some vet bed in their cage and at the moment they both look a little confused as they seem to be wondering where their sawdust is. I hope they dont smell as I keep them in my bed room - but in my new flat they'll be in the sitting room so I dont want visitors to get a horrible wiff when they come in ;)

vetbed

I have never thought of this, it saves a lot of money and I don´t get the problem with where to put the used sawdust (the garbage men pick up the trash once a month here{:|)

I am going to try the pads to :))

Oh dear - I'm not sure if I can bare the smell already. I think they are just really smelly boys. At least with sawdust the smell of that masks the wee for a little while. I'll have to see how it goes.

You just have to wait and se :)
I only have girls so I dont know how bad boars smell@)

Boys smell baaaddd !:)>>> - but my 2 ladies smell lovely x>> vet bed is great - saves a fortune.

I'm using vet bed for like 1 year and areas where thye actually pee all the time need to be changed 3 time a week. But it depends on how many of them.
My construction is here:

Piggy's has favorite places and these places survive only 2 days :)
Areas where they not sleep cold live up to 1 week.

i havent noticed boars smelling any different from the females to be honest - i found vet bed fab and have used it for years and wouldn't change it - i hoover all the poops out everyday, then wash it every 7 days - the last day or so before then it starts to smell, but then i wash it, so its no problem at all.

Does anyone else find that it gets sopping wet? I just changed my boys out having only had vet bed in for 3 days and it was soaking. I feel sorry for them if they have to sleep in soggy bedding.
Am I missing something or doing something wrong - I can't believe that my pigs wee more than anyone elses.

i don't think its just your piggies that wee wee alot! i have seen my piggies wee out of the cage and on top of the cat litter tray below! i wouldn't have believed it unless i had seen it!

i was thinking about vet bed when we rebuild the cages for the front room, the only trouble i have is that we don't have a washing machine and i don't think the service wash people would be happy putting furry blankets in their washing machine!:)p

I like it. I have a thick layer of newspaper first, then in half the cage I have shredded cardboard (something new I am trying out thanks to Christine) and in the other half I have fleece with some vet bed on top. I don't cover all the fleece with vet bed. It's just so there are different textures so Frankie can decide where he feels comfortable.
