Hello, I have had the night from hell, not only have I been up all night vomiting with a severe stomach bug but I also noticed my piggie Delilah sat in her cage squinting one eye and it looking a little watery. I reluctantly got her out as I tend to not get too close when I am ill and on inspection, I couldn't actually tell if her eye was injured. I may have noticed a small scratch however, in all honesty it could have been due to the reflection. I found it very difficult to identify anything in her eye. As I am extremely ill and unfortunately do not have any transport till Saturday, it is gonna be near impossible to get her to the vets. I am extremely worried and my anxiety is through the roof. I have taken pictures of her eye and would greatly appreciate any feedback. As I suffer from severe anxiety and OCD, I am not sure if I am worrying for nothing. Also, if it is a small scratch will it heal on its own? This is a nightmare. Thanks everyone.

Hi

Unfortunately, we cannot tell you from those pictures.

Please see a vet ideally within 12 hours if you notice a blueish/greyish patch forming either ot both just under the surface or as ulcerating gunk (sign of a fast developing eye infection) on the surface or if you notice plenty of watery tear fluid (sign of irritation and pain) or the eye being in-drawn (sign of pain). A sheet of tear fluid can sometimes mask the injury, which is why vets use a special dye under UV to assess the damage.

Most vets have a couple of slots kept open for emergencies when you call first thing in the morning and will do their best to fit in an eye injury.

As you are not well yourself right now I would recommend in this particular case that you keep observing for the time being but speak to the clinic as soon as you notice any of the signs mentioned above. If the spot persists but the eye stays stable, then please see your vet for a potential cataract or nuclear sclerosis once you are feeling better again.

Wishing you a good recovery.

Just adding my thoughts- don't stress yourself out too much. The vets were immensely helpful with all my piggies' hay poke injuries, and they all healed up absolutely fine after applying some vet-prescribed eye drops for just over a week. :) Be prepared for some wriggly-piggy battles if you do end up having to do eye drops...

I echo Wiebke's above comment in terms of seeing a vet as soon as practicable, especially if the eye gets worse in any way.

I hope you get better soon. 🥰

Yes her eye hasn't changed.

I have been dealing with an eye infection in my Tudur since Sunday - his eye was fine when I gave them their good night pellets for a last check and he had a fully developed pretty nasty ulcerating infection above and underneath the cornea in the morning; just to give you an idea of the speed and why my question.
Tudur is healing well thanks to prompt treatment; the infection is now stopped and has started to clear up. It is going to take another 7-10 days until his eye is fully healed up but we will get there. His cornea is badly scratched which takes a bit more time to heal up fully. ;) .

If you have concerns, please have the eye vet checked once you feel fit enough. It could be a small infection that is already healing up on its own or a cataract etc. but it needs a proper hands-on examination.

However, it is obviously not getting worse quickly right now, so please look after yourself.
