For the last few days, our Piggie (who is ~3 years old) has been very unwell.

We've already seen our usual vet, but today they have told us to go to a specialists. I have attempted to get an appointment at the specialists, but they do not have any appointments today and I have to ring tomorrow.

The symptoms have been:
1. Listless and lethargic. She's not moving much, certainly not in her usual way.
2. No apparent appetite: She hasn't seemingly eaten or drunk for a couple of days
3. Smelly, watery stools.

I'll also mention that our Piggie recently had a huge cyst on her side that burst. Unfortunately it happened during lockdown. Our vet prescribed Hibiscrub and anti-biotics along with an anti-inflammatory, but because of coronavirus, could not have her in for an appointment. So we were told to squeeze her cyst to clear the goop out regularly. It took months and months to get it down, but she's still got a bare patch that has pus that keeps returning coming from it. She's been through the trauma of being squeezed there on a daily basis with hibiscrub cleansing.

The Vets examined her, and her stool samples, and said it looks like she's got an upset stomach (it's not bloated or hard to the touch).
She was prescribed a thick paste that is extremely high in fibre, to try to get her guts working again, and to bind her stools a bit better. - 3x a day for 5 days.
Also we were told not to give her anything other than Hay and Water (no nuggets, no greens).
Her companion is perfectly fine, although she's clearly worried about her sister.

However, since visiting the vet, she's refused the paste - spitting it out (it's in a syringe) and showing little interest in any of the hay we give her. (we have fresh timothy).
She's now barely moving, although will move a little when nudged. She HAS shown a little bit of interest when her sister gets greens. Although we havent allowed her to eat anything under Vets Instructions from the greens bowl, twice she has wandered over to sniff what is there, but not taken anything - and not come back when we nudged her away from it.

She did do a few very tiny 'normal-ish' poops last night, but they've gone back to very watery today.

Now she's even more listless, and has her eyes half open - as if sleepy and doesn't seem as alert as she used to be.

We called the Vet again today, and they told us to go to a specialists instead, and to get X-rays and blood-works done. (one that is also listed here as a recommendation). Unfortunately they don't have any appointments today, and can only be booked for the same day, and are short staffed! Oh, and they are by far the closest to us of all the specialists listed - and even so, they are half an hour away.

We are very worried for our Piggie, but we are pretty certain she hasn't got much longer with us - and we feel pretty useless that there's nothing we can do. Even if we can get an appointment today - would it be realistic to assume the Vets would be able to do much more for her before it's too late? I'm assuming blood-works would take a day or two to get back results? Also we're worried that the Cyst may have caused more widespread infection? Vet didn't even mention it after examining her the 1st time.

Is there anything else we should be doing?!

Could you ring several vets, I know that you say that the one you have rung is the closest to you but could you ring around different ones (from the recommended list) as guinea pigs don’t really mind car journeys that much. I would also assume that giving the symptoms of your guinea pig you would probably be able to get an emergency appointment so make sure you mention the symptoms to the vet as your piggy sounds quite poorly. I hope that your pig gets better soon and you manage to get a vet appointment for her.

Your piggy does sound very poorly and she needs to see a vet urgently.

A piggy who isn’t eating hay for itself needs to be syringe fed either mashed up pellets or Oxbow critical care every couple of hours to maintain their weight and keep the guts working. I think the paste you’ve been told to give is likely a probiotic but it is not a food stuff. I’m just guessing here given you haven’t given the name of the ‘paste’.

:agr: Whereabouts are you located?

Hi!

Please see a vet as soon as possible and step in with support feeding to keep your girl alive until any treatment can kick in.
Take the time to read @Piggies&buns links; they will tell you exactly how to go about it and how you can improvise in a pinch.
But any effort will come to nothing unless you can get a diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.

Please be aware that guinea pigs are small and rather frail animals; they cannot go without food or with only very little food for long stretches of time. Keep in mind that about 80% of the daily food intake should be hay, which you cannot control by eye, only by weighing. Guinea pigs are also prey animals that will suppress any symptoms of illness for as long as possible. By the time they look ill, they are already seriously ill and cannot wait for very long.

Please always make sure that you know where your vets are and that you can pay for a consultation fee and basic medication at all times.

All the best!

Hi Folks,

Sadly I have to report that despite our best efforts to get her to a vet, and having phoned around several in our area (We are in norwest Kent), none had any availability today, even for emergencies The nearest availability was tomorrow.

Sadly that was not to be - Biscuit passed away peacefully this afternoon.

Sophie, her partner is very upset (as are we!)

Thank you for your help and information.

So very sorry that Biscuit didn’t make it. You did everything you possibly could.
At least she died peacefully in her own home.
Sophie will grI eve in her own way.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve
