Background info, my guinea pig (who is turning eight) developed a large ulcer-like abscess on his abdomen last year. He’s been to the vet for it, and we received antibiotics to treat his abscess. The infection cleared up but the mass itself never really went away and, well, now it’s back and **STOP READING IF YOU’RE MEDICALLY SQUEAMISH** now it’s leaking a milky white pus. I don’t think I can get him in to the vet for awhile due to the holidays and it’s not an emergency, he’s perky and alert as ever and not showing any medical distress so I mainly just need y’all’s tips on how to keep him most comfortable while I wait to get him in to see the vet?

I was going to start a saline rinse on him and give a topical otc antibiotic spray but any other tips?

Do you not have any emergency vets on the phone you could speak to? we don't condone home treatments, however, you need to do something to make the poor fella comfortable, when my rabbit had a large abscess in her neck, my vet recommended regular luke warm saline flushing of the wound to wash any pus out, making sure that you don't allow a scab to form as it locks the infection in.

Yeah, our emergency vets don’t do exotics :,( I’m hoping to get him in next week though!

And thanks for the idea! I’ll be doing that :)

I agree - we cannot advise on any home treatment but you can keep it clean with saline.
Do call for vets though as this would be considered urgent and actually shouldn’t wait more than 24 hours before being seen.
