My guinea pig Gumball is almost five years old. I feed her the normal food and water and that’s it! I gave her oranges for the first like two years I had her but then gradually stopped and I once in awhile give her an apple. But the past couple months she’s been squeaking less and when she does it’s quiet or sometimes loud but weird! And she hasn’t been eating or drinking either and at like about 1:30am I went and checked on her and she couldn’t move her lower half (including her legs) she could only move her front legs and head! And everytime she tried to move or just moves in general she shakes! And I’m in tears right now worrying about her because I don’t know what to do because it’s in the middle of the night so I can’t take her to the vet and I’m worried that she won’t make it through the night! Please help!

Hi! I am very sorry, but your guinea pig needs to see a vet as soon as you can take it there. Keep your guinea pig warm (but not hot) and as comfy as you can. If it has not been eating and drinking properly for a longer time because of its illness, then this is the best you can do as its body is likely closing down. :(

If your girl has not been eating for only a few hours, then you can try to syringe feed with a spoon or a syringe from an all night pharmacy. You can use mushed up pellets, but please only give very little (1/10 of a syringe) as she may no longer be able to process any food and be too weak to swallow much.
Not Eating And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding

Please make sure that any pet future pet of yours will see a vet as soon as it is not quite right.

Whereabouts are you located? You could try ringing your local vet for an emergency number these are often given on answer phone messages. If you are a younger member of the forum please speak to your parents or guardian telling them how important it is threat your piggy sees a vet as soon as possible.

We had a guinea pig come in to the rescue with suspected scurvy; his hair was very rough and his joints were very stiff :(

There is no vet around where I live that takes guinea pigs! So I’ve been panicking! My mom is going to the pet store and asking people and getting medicine for her!

Is there any way you can get to an emergency vet?
Has she been getting veggies daily? X
There is no vet that takes guinea pigs! And sadly no! I give her wild harvest advanced nutrition diet food but that’s it!

Vegetables and hay are a majorly important part of a guinea pig’s diet!
They must have vegetables for the vitamin c content and hay to keep their teeth trim and for fibre.
Hay and veg should be the largest portion of a guinea pig’s diet by far; if she makes it please start giving her these!

Do either of your parents drive? It would be worth travelling further afield to find a guinea pinsavvy vet; if she isn’t eating and is paralysed, she really needs it. Good luck!

I definitely will! Thank you

By the sounds of it she has scurvy and that's because she's not been having veggies for a long time, which is an important part of their diet. I don't think pet shop medicine will help this especially without vet treatment.

She will definitely need grass and veggies to stop any further damage though so it will be worth looking at the feeding guidelines to make sure she gets what she needs for the future.

She needs daily vegetables, and she needs to see a vet ASAP. Please get her to a vet

You need to start feeding veg daily. Think things like bell pepper slices with the seeds removed

Coriander, parsley, cucumber etc.... Read our guides in diet section. She needs unlimited hay also.

Please get your parents to take her to the vet this is a medical emergency. I can't stress this enough. Scurvy could be a real issue here Guinea Lynx :: Scurvy -- Vitamin C Deficiency as she had not been eating correctly.

Can you feed vegetables from today? Can you get some hay?

Her food is full of veggies and I went to the store a got vitamin c drops and put it in her water and she has a bunch of hay in her cage but the only thing she kinda eats is the apples and she has drank a little today!

As she's not had veg before she'll be a bit nervous and has to get used to it so keep trying. I found it helped to eat a piece in front of the pig as they learn what's safe from other pigs.

You should start syringeing water if she isn't drinking
you shouldnt feed just apple as that can cause painful sores around the mouth. Change the hay to a different brand or type, so it will spark her interest, she will get vitamins from hay. Never put vit C in her water. You may find that she will Eat more. Hay is the most important food. If she won't eat hay, you are going to have to feed her critical care. Feed her lots of different veggies. It's no good getting your mum to get the poor little thing, medicine. pet shops give misleading information. As you don't know what is the matter with your piggy how can you treat her. As SB has said there are vets near you. We can only give you advise, you we cant take the place of a vet by the way remove the apples it's going to make her ill.
