The hot weather on Monday and Tuesday in the UK is causing me some worry. We have long haired guinea pigs; they live indoors in a cage. It’s saying it will reach 38C here and the apartment we live in gets very warm as it catches the sun for most of the day.

How can I keep my guinea pigs cool safely? I’ll be at work all day and don’t want them to suffer or become ill with heat stroke. I’ve read about ice bottles but with not being here, I don’t want any ice packs to cause wet bedding or it be too cold for them. Advice needed!

I'm putting in a vote for the wet sheet tip but I guess it would only be OK to leave a window open if you were actually in the house... unless you put a fan by a clothes horse of wet washing? Anyway, my pigs live indoors and we have the back door open for air, and a canopy outside to block the worst of the sun, but this week I tried hanging one of the wet, just-washed sheets over the curtain rail at the back door. The very gentle breeze that came in was immediately chilled down - I was surprised that you could feel the difference straight off. I've been wetting down a sheet and hanging it across the open door ever since.

Oh, and my long haired one got a trim!
