i remember when i use to have rodents, they were housed in the shed

and sometimes we'd open the cage to find mice in there with them!

even though the hutch was chest height

i fear now i could have this problem with housing the new ginnies in the garden

is there any way or prevent them coming anyway near the hutches?

this is the one reason I'm really leaning against getting a pair now, just in case

I don't know of anyway to keep them away. The only way i got rid of mice earlier this year was to bring the piggies into the house which meant their food came with them. When the mice realised no more food in the hutches they moved on. My mesh is 13mm & they'd no problem getting in as they can dislocate their bones & access a hole the diameter of a pencil whereas rats can't. We have an ongoing rat problem in our area but they can't get into my hutches & so look elsewhere for food :)

I can totally relate to what your saying, I had rabbits outside in hutches every time I opened my back door I'd see mice running out of the cage. That's why when I got my pigs I kept them indoors, I think mice can transfer disease to pets.
