Good morning,

We recently lost one of our girls to a bladder tumour 3 weeks ago, the remaining Guinea pig started showing similar symptoms on Monday so I took her to the vets and she was prescribed antibiotics as the vet did a scan and said there was no mass so a UTI

We’re now 4 doses into the antibiotics and I think it’s getting worse, her back end is completely sodden, when I held her to give her antibiotics she is streaming milky fluid and she is so smelly, the vet said it will take a few days but does this type of thing get worse before it gets better?

She’s eating and drinking and generally seeming ok, not squeaky at all when held or when the vet checked her over

Any advice gratefully received :-(

I’m sorry for your loss.

I would go back to the vet if she is getting worse. Yes it does take a few days for antibiotics to start working but it is never worth leaving something unchecked if you think she is getting worse.

Is she on any painkillers?
What dosage of antibiotics is she on?

Make sure you switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh her daily while she is unwell. As hay is their main food intake and you can’t judge sufficient hay intake by eye, the daily weight checks are essential to ensuring you are monitoring and prepared to step in with syringe feeding if needed.

Emergency and Crisis Care as well as Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Thank you

She’s currently on 0.2ml baytrill (twice daily) and 0.4metacam (once)
