My five year old sow, Peanut, a week ago started weeing with blood in it. Took her to the vets who suggested it was a UTI. Prescribed baytril 0.8ml once a day and painkiller 0.4ml once a day. She was booked in for X-rays next Friday.

She wasn’t squeaking when peeing or any other noticeable symptoms. Still eating like usual and drinking, her usual self.

Yesterday she wouldn’t take any food or hay, still occasional drinking but not her usual. Vets have prescribed gut stimulant every 8 hours. I’ve been offering veggies which she had a little and have been syringing critical care every few hours and throughout the night.

Poos are very small and tapered towards the end and reduced significantly, she has still been peeing, which is still sometimes red or pink.

Could this non eating be because of the baytril and do I continue to give her this whilst she isn’t eating? I’ve also been giving her probiotic about 1-2 hours after the baytril.

She is nibbling at hay but not really interested in eating so I’m continuing the syringe feeding, which she takes as opposed to me having to use force . This is the first time she has ever been poorly and had antibiotics she is usually in good health.

Antibiotics can reduce their appetite - they kill the good gut bacteria as well as the bad illness causing bacteria. This is rather normal. You are doing the right thing in giving her probiotics.
Please do not stop giving the antibiotics - it is essential the full course is given.
Please continue to syringe feed her as much as she will take at each sitting - the less she takes at each sitting, the more sittings will be needed. You will need to weigh her every day so you can monitor that she is being given enough syringe feed in each 24 hour period - any loss of weight means she isnt eating enough.

Thankyou, will keep up with the baytril and will weigh her as I’m about to give her some more critical care as she only took about 8ml at 8.30

I'm sorry you're going through this with your piggie. Baytril is known for causing digestive upset in piggies, I've had it happen plenty of times.

It's great you're giving probiotics too, what kind may I ask? Fibreplex is hands down my favourite and works really well for my piggies.

If she has stopped eating despite probiotics it may be worth asking your vet to switch to something like sulfatrim, its much kinder to the gut in my experience and some have said its supposedly better for UTIs, I could be wrong on that though. Don't stop giving the baytril without consulting your vet, they will be able to better advise on what's best for your piggie.

I hope your piggie feels better soon ❤

Which gut stimulants has your vet prescribed. Cisapride and Emeprid are the usual 2 but very few vets tell you that they should be taken at least a hour apart to be of most help. You can also give your piggy some probiotic in water. Mix 1/8 teaspoon of probiotic with 20ml of water and give 5 to 7ml of the mixture after each feeding session. This helps with the gut flora. The most commonly available are Pro-C or Avipro Plus.

She is having pro-c probiotic, she has just eaten some herbs, and I’ve managed to syringe some more cc, weighed hasn’t changed which is good! She is at 1047g :)

She had Emeprid, I’ve been giving pro-c in water like you said but will up the dose as she isnt really drinking much

If she isn’t drinking much, then you can always just give plain water and instead put the pro-c directly into the critical care syringe feed

Yes I’ve been mixing it in with the cc and syringing water just to cover all bases really, she seems to have perked up today but still won’t touch her hay apart from the odd nibble :(:(

Does she have a healthy companion? Poop soup made from the incredibly fresh poops of a healthy companion can work better in replacing the gut bacteria than probiotics

She had a companion but she has just gotten over a recurrent URI so she hasn’t been in the best health but she is ok now. Peanuts just had some grass and ate it!

They can't overdose on probiotics so don't worry about her drinking a lot. I'm currently syringe feeding a weight loss boy. I give him 5ml of the mixture with his meds first thing. Then he has 5ml after each of his syringe feeds. Most guinea pigs like it better than plain water.

My Ted was given Sulfatrim AB’s for a UTI and he had no change in appetite so if this continues, ask your vet to change her AB’s

If you don't trust your other piggy's poops, your vet may be able to get you some from another healthy patient. At least where I am, my vet will occasionally request fresh poops from healthy pigs! lol
