Evening all looking for a little reassurance really regarding our little piggy. Long story short he’s being treated for UTI (blood in urine squealing while pooping and peeing)he was put on Baytril and Metacam last Wednesday, I took him back to the vets on Tuesday this week as wasn’t seeing any progress at all and he was just hiding in one of his tunnels downstairs. The vet said to try a new antibiotic Septrin and I also started giving him pro C probiotic which he has been on now for three full days and we are noticing a change for the better. His appetite is returning, is running to the cage door to greet us and seems more alert than he had done. This is all good news BUT he is still squealing and hunched when peeing and pooping and although the amount of blood in his urine doesn’t seem as red it is still a rusty colour. I suppose my question is how long does it usually take for the squealing/hunching to ease if it is a UTI as I hate seeing him in so much discomfort 😢and how long do UTIs usually take to clear up? I don’t think the Baytril was working for my piggy but 3 days into Septrin he does seem to be responding although slowly. Any comments/thoughts greatly appreciated - thanks in advance

Hi!

Septrin/sulfatrim takes a bit longer to respond to but it is overall more effective. You expect about 3-4 days before acute symtoms to subside but it can take as much as a week. A course of septrin should last preferably 3-4 weeks.

If symptoms remain or recur after the end of treatment or if you piggy continues to deteriorate, please have your piggy investigated for potential bladder stones or sludge and after that has been excluded but problems remain for sterile interstitial cystitis (i.e. non-bacterial recurring bladder infection). The last has become a lot more common over the last decade but is not much known outside vets that see plenty of piggies and is usually diagnosed by default after all other potential issues that present with very similar symptoms have been excluded.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Our piggy does seem to responding to the Septrin better than the Baytrill we are only three days in on Septrin so hopefully the next few days will see further improvement- thanks again

I have more one question if I may🤞 The vet has prescribed 3units of metacam once a day although my piggy does seem to still be in a quite a bit of pain when urinating and pooping - i was wondering if it would be ok to increase the dose and give him metacam twice a day to make him more comfortable. He’s on cat metacam and is currently only 860g although his appetite is increasing
