Hi Everyone,

Having a bit of bladder trouble with one of my girls. Back in September, Dizzy was showing signs of a UTI so was given a course of antibiotics (unfortunately can’t remember the name) it seemed to clear up but she then started to lose weight and show symptoms again. I took her back to have an X-ray which showed no stones so I was given another course of antibiotics. She has now almost completed a month long course of baytril, I have had her in for checkups twice during the course and my vet agrees that she has improved greatly and that her bladder feels a lot more comfortable. She went through a rough period but she’s about 90% herself again. My only concern is that her bum and tummy are still pretty soaked in urine, she does mostly pee as normal but she is definitely still leaking urine at times.

Does anyone have any experience with a super stubborn UTI that has needed a longer course of antibiotics than a month? Or is it such a thing that her bladder could be a bit damaged from the infection? I am also aware of sterile cystitis, is it possible it could be this even though the baytril has clearly helped? I have been giving her glucosamine just in case.

My vet is very experienced and I have full trust in her but was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences or insights.

Thanks!

Sorry I dont have much advice. But what has helped my boy is painkillers. It seemed to break the cycle of leaking urine. I think becuase it made it less painful to wee properly. Is she on any painkillers? I know it can be different between girls and boys though also

Sorry yes forgot to mention she’s on metacam too and we also have some stronger pain meds if she needs it. Will maybe try her on the stronger stuff again to see if that helps. Thanks 😊

I’m sorry to hear this.

Antibiotics can temporarily suppress sterile cystitis symptoms but symptoms then return - it’s one of the defining feature of sterile cystitis.
Sterile cystitis is much more common than a bacterial UTI.

I’m glad you’ve got her on glucosamine. Management of sterile cystitis is with glucosamine and daily painkillers.
It’s about finding a maintenance dose of both which keeps symptoms at bay. You then increase the dose during a flare up, and reduce back down to maintenance dose once the flare passes.

Ah it definitely sounds like it could be sterile cystitis then. I will maybe try upping her to 2 capsules of glucosamine a day and see if that helps in the mean time. Thank you!

I don't know if it's of any interest to you but piggie parcels have started selling joint support pellets with added glucosamine. I have a boy with a history of uti's and he's now on them. He was having their normal pellets anyway (as well as their urinary support forage parcel) so I decided to try. I don't know if they will do any good but he's absolutely loving them and it's cheaper than giving separate glucosamine. I also have a satin so figured the joint support may be beneficial for him too.

Oh they sound interesting, I will definitely have a look into them. Thank you!
