Hi, I just adopted a 2 year old guinea pig who used to have a URI. He was on Bactrim for 29 days(at the adoption center) and stopped taking it exactly ten days ago. On the vet papers it says he had crusty eyes and a rhaspy whistle when he breathed. Currently, He still has a little bit of crust near his eyes, and he still whistles when he breathes sometimes and hiccups. The adoption center told us hes feeling better but his breathing is still recovering so we knew this. He hasent been to the vet yet since the initial appointment, but we are going to bring him in about a week(or should we earlier?).
My question is, is it safe to house my other guinea pig with him? I'm afraid he could still have some URI left in him that can transfer to my other guinea pig. Does anyone think thats likley? is he still sick or is he just recovering?

I’m afraid we can’t know what is actually happening . A vet check would be a good idea.

I'd go to a vet asap as guinea pigs can go downhill so quickly.

I also wouldn't house them together until he has made a full recovery. From experience, I recently bought a new guinea pig who was 8 weeks old (and breathing weirdly) and housed him with my 2 year old (as his brother recently passed), and he has given my 2 year old his respiratory infection :(

I would consider quarantining him given his age and that he didn’t have any follow-up appointments before you brought him home. Was he given a clean bill of health aside from the URI for which he’d just finished the meds? Hopefully all goes well with the vet visit and he’s cleared so you can bond him.

@mackenziejanetaylor piggies under four months of age need to be bonded straight away. If there is any illness they come with then that unfortunately just needs to be dealt with if it’s spread to companions. The need for companionship for them trumps the need for us to keep our existing piggies healthy. Hope your boys get better soon.

I'm so sorry about your guinea pig! Thanks for replying.

Ok thanks! Yes, the vet said he was fine besides for the URI.
