Hi all, not posted for a while. When I got up this morning, my 4 year old male Snowy seemed quiet and looked quite puffed up. Got him out and noticed he had a quite crusty eye and slightly snotty nose. Taken him to the vet who prescribed 0.8ml baytril for 5 days as he was a little crackly. His temperature was low at 37.7. She also said it might be an idea to separate from my other pig in case of contagion. I’ve never separated before and due to my large cage, the only other place I could set him up with a pen would be in a bedroom. Do you think this necessary/wise? Would it break the bond keeping apart for 5 days? They would both be totally miserable 😞 thoughts? Also it wasn’t my usual vet but she seemed very competent in her examination.

If it's contagious then your other piggie will have already been exposed to the infection and will develop signs too. Personally wouldn't separate if your concerned but cannot say for certain. 5 days is a very short course of antibiotics for a respiratory infection so if not improved I would definitely ask for a longer course.

Snowy went downhill, started syringe feeding yesterday but was refusing this morning. He was admitted to the vet where they found gas. He has been aggressively force fed cc at the vet as well as given injections of emprid and metacam as well as sub cut fluids. He is home now and I have managed to get another 15ml cc into him over the last 2 hours which I will continue every couple of hours through the night. Back to the vet tomorrow morning for a check and for more pain relief and motility meds. What an amazingly stressful day!

Poor Snowy & poor you, what a stressful day. Well done for keeping up the regular hand feeding, sounds like you’re doing a great job. A side effect of baytril can often be loss of appetite as well. Has Snowy been given a probiotic to take, such as Fibreplex? Antibiotics can kill both the bad & good bacteria so it’s usually recommended to take them along with a probiotic.

Yes he is on pro biotics as well. At the vets at 10.30 this morning. I’ve still not seen any poo as yet but he looks like he is trying to go every now and again and he’s a bit figety and still a bit puffed with pain. Hopefully the car journey will help with the gas as I tried to massage with a vibration toothbrush but he was just kicking me. He’s definitely got more fight in him than 24 hours ago so I’m hoping that’s a positive sign.

Hope the Vets goes well, sounds like a good sign if he’s got more fight in him today. Is he on any medication to relieve the bloat?

Thankyou. He was given an emeprid injection yesterday so I’m hoping they’ll give me some of the oral meds to keep it going in the right direction. He definitely needs more pain relief.

That’s good, hope this morning’s appointment went well & that you see some poo soon!

Thanks the appointment went as well as can be expected, seems like the gas has shifted down a bit towards the exit! Prescribed 0.5ml emperid twice a day and 0.4ml metacam but I’m splitting that into 2 doses. Just the poo waiting game now!

That’s some good news then! Hopefully not long until some poo now! I never thought I’d ever be rifling through bedding praying to find poo before I had pets!

Hallelujah! Eating and drinking independently! So I’m just topping up with cc until he starts doing proper poops again.

Yey, great news! So glad he’s feeling better 😃 must be such a relief for you
