Hii,
My guinea pig, T Bag, has had his second URI in about two months. This time we've been treating it for about 8 or 9 days and it's not completely cleared up. He is so much better now, only slightly wheezing, but he's been like this for a few days now with no improvement. We have enough Baytril to continue but I worry that it might not be healthy for him. What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Other than his slightly wheezy nose, he's normal and is eating fine.
Thanks

If he's eating fine and pooping normally then I would definately continue. URIs can be hard to shake off, so it's very important you continue the antibiotics. The only thing you could do is add a a pro biotic - avipro is one, bio lapis is another.

Hiya Joe,

Have you tried sudafed? My little one had a bout of URI over the weekend and the lady from the rescue centre gave him 0.3mls of infant sudafed mixed with a dierectic to clear his lungs and within hours his breathing was less noisy.

Today he's a million times better but I'm still giving Baytril as a precaution.

Hope T Bag gets better soon :smitten:
x

It's been 2 weeks now and T Bag is still poorly. He's still wheezing a fair bit and sneezing a lot. I'm still feeding him Baytril twice a day. I guess I should take him back to the vets?

I would continue the baytril. What dosage are you giving? Sudafed for children is good also, one dose will help.

One of my pigs was on 0.4mls baytril x twice daily for 3 weeks for a stubborn infection.

I'm glad to hear this can be normal. He's getting 0.2ml twice a day. I might try sudafed. Thanks.

How old is your pig and do you know how much he weighs? I would phone the vet and ask if you can up the dosage to 0.4mls. It sounds like 0.2mls isnt cutting it. Sunny weighed 850grams at the time he was on that dose and was fine. A pro bitotic is very important as it keeps their tummies in good health whilst on AB's.

Sorry-went offline.

Bio lapis, your vet will have some. Disolve in 50mls water and syringe often as you can throughout the day. They like the taste so its quite easy to give. I used a 5ml syringe from childrens nurofen bottle :D
