Hello All,
I am a new guinea pig owner and my girls Oreo (1 year) and Peanut (2 months) are receiving antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection.

My concern is in regards to my older guinea pig Oreo. The vet advised me to keep an eye on her appetite and I have noticed in the last 12 hours she has not eaten much. I got her to eat a small piece of green pepper and some hay but she won't eat more.

So, should I be concerned if she isn't eating much like she hasn't totally stopped but it is significantly less than usual... Should I call the vet? Or she doing okay as long as she is nibbling here and there?

I am so nervous and I appreciate the help!

You should try and get hold of a probiotic to give her either two hours before or one hour after the antibiotic. You will have to weigh them both daily at the same time and step in with syringe feeding the older one. If she’s not eating enough hay then she will lose weight. Veg is a snack so doesn’t affect weight as much as hay.

You should aim for minimum 60ml in a 24 hour period for a piggy that’s not eating by itself at all. The daily weighing will also guide you. You are a aiming to help her maintain her weight.

I hope they both start feeling better soon. How long will they be on the antibiotics and which one were they prescribed?

Antibiotics can upset their tummies as they also kill the good gut bacteria as well as the bacteria causing the illness.
When a piggy goes off their food due to antibiotics, it is important that you switch from the normal weekly weight checks to instead weighing them daily. This enables you to keep a much closer eye on the hay intake. If they aren’t eating as much hay as they should be and/or weight is being lost, you must step in and syringe feed to replace the fibre which piggy is not eating for themselves. A piggy who is eating less or not eating at all needs help. It is also a good idea to offer a probiotic as that can help stabilise the gut bacteria.

Thank-you!

The antibiotic is Baytril twice a day (0.8mL for Oreo) and (0.3mL for Peanut).
