Hi there! Newcomer to the forum...what an awesome community! My piggy Akiko was adopted three weeks ago from PetSmart. She developed an eye infection four days after coming home which quickly spread to both eyes and she went to the vets twice for. She went on eye drops and URI antibiotics (Orbax and Ciprofloxacin drops) only to have very bad GI problems from the Orbax. She was switched to Bactrum which seemed to help a lot. I then noticed a scab between her ear and eye which looked pretty bad. I took her in and the vet said it was ringworm. She was given conofite lotion and an oral Itrafungol. Since starting it the area has gotten much worse with a lot of blood. I’ve read a lot that worsening is normal and I suspect that the blood is from scratching, but I’m curious if anyone else has seen similar issues? I’ve attached some photos to help in order of days one-three of antibiotics. Thanks for any responses265BE425-BDEE-4FB3-8830-D2C07BEC3C40.webp394B7260-573A-4BA1-A6DE-43C4CE25C187.webp1DEA58D5-49F1-4370-B31A-A3C4FCAD980D.webp!

Hello and welcome
Aw, poor little piggie, she is having a really hard time of it. I would take her back to the vets again, that looks really sore
I have no experience of these conditions but will tag a forum member for you @Abi_nurse Hope you can get her better soon x

Aww poor little girl that looks so sore, must be stressful for you both ☹️ I am sorry I have no advice for you as I haven't had to deal with anything like that but I hope you manage to get it under control and healing soon.

Oh dear that does look very sore, it sounds like the vet has given you effective ringworm treatment but you should go back and see if there is some pain relief they can offer- metacam/loxicom like @sport_billy suggests, or perhaps even something stronger like buprenorphine for a few days just while that nasty wound starts to heal. Possibly if she's scratched it a lot there could be a secondary bacterial infection going on now too... healing wheeks, your vet can advise best x

Thank you I plan to see him Wednesday!

Quick update: she’s feeling a lot better based on her behavior, and the bloody scab has come off to reveal nice freshly healed skin and overall a much happier piggy. She even fell asleep on my lap tonight for the first time which was a big moment for both of us. Thanks for all the answers and comfort, it was immensely helpful!

Hi I know this is an old thread but I have similar with my little piggie coco. Did it just get better with time and the ringworm medication? He’s absolutely fine in himself and eating well, I’m a new owner and first time Guinea pig owner so finding it all a bit stressful and upsetting. It looked so red and sore this morning, my husband said to give it a couple more days before we go back to the vets but I’m undecided (he only started cream yesterday )

I know I have commented on your thread on the subject but ringworm tends to look worse before getting better. However using anti fungal creams (if that is what you mean) is not an effective way (in fact it’s an outdated way) to treat it.
