I have 2 piggies. Both have URI and one has an Uri and pneumonia. We got both boys from a pet store on Jan2. We have seen our vet. We have started baytril, Bene-bac, and critical care. We are monitoring the temp in their room, hand feeding and having hay avail at all times. Can you give me any other tips, suggestions or help? I really don’t want to loose my boys.

Hi

You may find these links here helpful. Just hang on in there through the crisis. Antibiotics need several days to build up for optimum efficiency so you will always have to finish a course even after symptoms have subsided.

You good care is as important as the medication, as no medication can get to work if you are not monitoring the weight by weighing daily at the same time and adjusting the support feed according to the amount of weight loss. Because the need to breath comes before the need to eat, respiratory illnesses are particularly prone to having an appetite problem. Please be extra careful with young piggies and do not simply squirt any food or water into the mouth; only give about 0.1-1.3 ml slowly to allow the piggy to process what it has in the mouth before giving more. the guides above contain pictures and a feeding video and all the practical advice as to how much and how often to feed, depending on the degree of weight loss.

With a little luck, your two should make a full recovery and have a happy and long healthy life. ;)

The vet probably told you but if they have just started the antibiotics bear in mind that it can be 2 -3 days before you see them making any difference, although on the bright side it can also be within 24 hours sometimes! Just don't get too disheartened if there is not much difference for the first few days. If you get to days 4 and 5 with no improvement (or even worsening) call the vet and tell them. Stay strong little guys, and be brave for your owner 💕
