Hi there

Today I took my guinea pig to the vets to be castrated, since returning home I have noticed something long and red hanging from him. Anyone know what this is/is it urgent?

Thanks IMG_1649.webp

I can’t tell what that is, it it’s certainly not normal. Do your vets do their own emergency cover or do they have an emergency vet for cover who you can call for advice (and email the photos to).

Hi Vicki

Thank you for your response, I have just sent the photo to a emergency vet:)

Gosh poor little boy - hopefully it isn’t anything to worry about and your vet can sort it out. Good luck and well done on acting so quickly !

I hope it gets sorted out quickly. No idea what it is. Good luck.

Well done on contacting the emergency vet, he might have torn some of his stitches open. I hope it can be sorted quickly for both your sakes and that he recovers quickly from his op x

Any news on your little boy ? I really hope he’s ok 🥰

Thank you for all your wishes, just out of interest I have posted further photos, has anyone seen/come across this before?

Oh my that is definitely a veterinary emergency- it looks like his surgery wound has opened and some of his insides have prolapsed and come out through the hole? That won't wait at all, please take him to an emergency vet immediately!

Yes we took him to the Vets straight away on Thursday.

No idea but it can't be good. Super go to the vets, tonight.

Edit: I see he went to the vet on Thursday, but it needs another one.

I think if the vet didnt disinfect the prolapsed organs then pop them back inside and stitch both the abdominal wall then the skin firmly shut and prescribe some strong antibiotics to prevent peritonitis and offer daily check ups for a week... they are not doing their job properly unfortunately and you need to find a better vet...

What did the vet say on Thursday?
They said its really rare to start with. The actual technicals I can't fully remember but along the lines of it was either the Tunic or Seminal Vesicles. If one of them was cut they said what would happen is the organs would fall out progressively. If they attempted surgery the risks were incredibly high, due to he had already been under anaesthesia that day and the following risk of infections/abscess's. In all honesty I can't fully remember the ins & out as it was all a bit of a blur as unfortunately Frank is no longer with us which is heart breaking.

Oh my gosh poor, poor Frank 😢
I'm so sorry for your loss. Castration should be something relatively routine for piggies but I guess it's finding a vet with plenty of experience. I've only had one boar castrated but I know there are members here who work with rescues and have seen many boys castrated. The usual problem people post for, if anything, is when the wound gets infected and develops an abscess. Here it just looked like the wound (just one cut? not one on each side?) had opened up again completely, I can't even see a stitch that might have broken. How long was he at the vets to recover before they sent him back home to you?

I’m so very sorry Frank didn’t make it. That’s so sad and such an awful shock for you.

I'm very sorry for your loss, it looks like the vet has attempted a form of castration where the incision is in the abdomeen rather that the scrotum, which is quite novel and requires a great deal of technical skill in small animal surgery- and also needs a great deal of skill and especially a prompt and pre-planned "plan B" to go back in and surgically fix if it goes wrong. I'm very sorry your vet was unable to deliver this for you, most vets in the UK post neutering will give a free check up after 24 hours and again after 3 days and would be willing and able to fix this as an emergency at any time if it occured as a direct result of a surgery fail- neutering is usually a very safe operation and I'm very sorry you had a bad expereience and lost your piggy :( x

I'm so sorry he didn't make it. That's awful. ((HUGS)) to you.
