Hello, I was hoping someone could help with a problem my piggy, Bear, is having.
Last Sunday, Bear was a bit lethargic and started squeaking when trying to pee/poop. He was still eating and drinking but I made an appointment on Monday with the vet but couldn't get an appointment until Wednesday. The vet said she thought Bear had stones and suggested an xray. By this time, Bear was not really eating much and I was syringe feeding critical care and liquid. I was given Sulfatrim antibiotics and Metacam pain meds. The xray was Friday and there was nothing showing on the xrays to indicate stones or any problem. Friday morning, Bear had diarrhoea and the vet said to stop the Metacam.
Bear isn't wanting to eat much but I'm managing to get a little into him plus the critical care which I'm blitzing with Pro-Fibre pellets and a small amount of oats. He is having Bio Lapis through the day and I've given him potassium citrate for the past 6 days which seems to be helping him to pass sludge.
Bear has pooped other than a little bit of sticky sludge but he is peeing, just not in the amounts that he used to pee.
Although the vet says there were no stones, Friday night, Bear passed two stones which are about 3-4mm in size, round and an amber colour. Early yesterday morning, Bear passed three more stones and another one yesterday evening. Not sure what the stones are... oxalate? struvite?
Bear has the will to live and his eyes and coat are bright and shiny but he is very listless and just wants to be cuddled all the time which is what I've been doing.
Yesterday Bear's abdomen started to feel sloshy and squishy. I have given him 1ml of gripe water today and it seems to have perked him up and he's trying to eat more. I'm not sure if I should give more gripe water? I also have Dentinox if any of you super knowledgeable piggy people could advise please?
Bear is back at the vets tomorrow afternoon. I don't want to give up on him when he is trying so hard but I don't know what else I can do. I feed Bear every two hours during the day and every four hours at night and sit up with him while he wants cuddles.

A little background on Bear: I've had him almost three years and Bear could be about five years old ish. When I got him from a rescue, he had cervical spondylosis which is why he is on his own as the rescue said that is what their vets had recommended. Bear has a few other health issues too as well as intermittent paralysis of his back legs but he is generally a happy and energetic piggy who loves life. I give Bear a daily dose containing glucosamine, MSM, CBD, flax oil and colloidal silver. With his daily "meds" that I give him, he was able to come off the pain meds he was on when I got him as the vets were pleased with his progress so normally, Bear doesn't take any prescribed medications.

Any advice would be very welcome. I will see what the vets says tomorrow but should I give more gripe water as he is making a lot of tummy noises and I think if I could make that better, he would perk up a bit more. No idea how many more stones Bear could have but I keep on with the massaging of his tummy and he seems to enjoy that.

Thank you so much for your help and advise.

Scarlett

If his tummy is still soft, then gripe water is fine to give. If it becomes hard, or sounds hollow, then that is a serious problem and potentially life threatening condition and will require an immediate emergency vet (gripe water will not solve that).
The antibiotics is most likely to be the cause of a tummy upset, rather than the metacam. As it is clear he has stones and a sore tummy from gas, then he may well be needing the pain relief.
As he is passing stones then if this was my piggy, I would personally see a vet today rather than wait until tomorrow. Stones in boars can become a serious issue so I would want a check done sooner rather than later to find out if there are any more.
Are you weighing him daily?

Thank you so much for your reply. Bear's tummy is soft and it doesn't bother him when I massage it at all. It's not hollow sounding at all.
The vet did say that if the diarrhoea continued then to also stop the antibiotics but otherwise to continue with them. As Bear has not continued with diarrhoea then I carried on with antibiotics.
They couldn't see any stones on the xray and couldn't feel any so it was a surprise to see him pass them.
Yes, weighing Bear. He had lost some weight but is stable now.
I did wonder if the critical care was upsetting Bear's tummy as I try to keep him grain-free and there are things in critical care that I wouldn't normally feed him.
I will call the vets. When I made the appointment for tomorrow, I did say that there were stones.
Thank you.
