Hi,

I am panicking a little to say the least. We've bought two new companion pigs, 1 boy and 1 girl, to be companions for pigs we already have. They are both babies, 6 weeks old. I was reassured there is definitely one boy and one girl but the person who dropped them off to me did not know which was which.

I tried to figure out myself, and believed that pig 1 was male and pig 2 was female. After I came to this conclusion, the person who dropped them off to me messaged me saying they had queried with the owner, and they believe the opposite to me. I have posted on facebook and some think there are two males :'( and some think the same as me.

I am now very worried, and haven't introduced them to my piggies and have separated them from each other.

I am praying there is definitely one boy and one girl.

I believe pig 1 is definitely a boy because I popped out what I thought was male genitalea (sorry not sure if what words can be said on this forum!) - I could not pop anything out for pig 2.

Please can you help me figure out which is which so I can introduce them? I believed the person who dropped them to me would know so now I am very worried! Thanks so much.

Pictures to follow in the comments

Going to try and send a clearer picture of pig 2. We have a video of pig 1 popping out but not sure if I can upload that or not.

Hi

It still looks more like a boy than a girl to me. It is not easy to express the penis in babies. But what you can it to feel for the tiny penis shaft (ridge) bump just above the penis button in your confirmed boy and then feel for it in the questionable baby. Sows don't have this bump; they are completely flat under the skin in this area. ;)

Is it pig 1 or pig 2 you think looks like a boy sorry? or both?

To me, pig 1 looks like a boy and pig 2 looks like a girl, but it can't be so hard to tell just from pictures.

Baby #1 - I assumed that this was the one in question from your first post.

Please try to have a look inside the slit of baby #2 and also feel for the presence/absence of a penis ridge.
Sows have a fleshy seal inside the slit just below the rim with a knob that is never quite round. Compare with the slit of the female companion and the male companion. you should find hat the difference inside the slit is quite striking!
The comparison slit pictures in our guide should also help you. You should hopefully find that you have indeed got a little girl. It looks rather like it to me; but I am only guessing.

Thank you so much both of you, it is such a relief that there is still hope she is a girl! I think I will leave them separated tonight and then properly check the slit/ridge tomorrow

Thanks so much everyone! I have an older solo boy and an older solo girl and I want them to have companions and I didn't want to neuter or castrate any of my pigs. I'm so scared of putting my girl at risk if i put a male in with her by mistake!

I have looked at the slit and I think that there is a closed bit in it which from what I understand from the guide makes it all the more likely she is a girl. Do you think I have understood the guide correctly?

I'm not sure how well I've explained what I mean so I'm just going to re explain below:

If a pig is male and you check the slit there is only one hole. If a pig is female there is a closed bit in the hole unless she is in season.

Yes - in a sow, there is no open hole and no straight slit. Feeling for the presence/absence of a penis bump under skin is the independent confirmation method; if you get the same answer from both examinations you can be 100% sure that you have got the correct sex.

We try our best to teach our members how to sex piggies reliably themselves by learning where to look and feel exactly for the right results. It is not worst life skill to acquire! ;)
