Pammy

Hello everyone I am looking for some urgent help. Sorry i am new here found you by accident and I will post an into later. One of my piggy's Ozzy took ill this morning with breathing difficulties and no appetite. This was at 8.30am, I rushed him to the vet along with his companion at 9.20. My vet said he has pneumonia:( he was given an antibiotic/antiinflamatory injection. She says a lot of this has been happening recently in quite a few animals due to the funny weather here in Scotland. Ozzy is 3 yrs old and all my piggy's are house pigs. Is there anything else I can do to help him? All help very greatly appreciated.

Is he on antibiotics?

I would be syringe feeding him critical care which should be available from your vets or mashed pellets if he is not eating. I would also syringe water. I find wrapping piggy in a towel with his back to your stomach the easiest way to feed. You can get syringes from your vet too if you don't have any.

What bedding is he on? I would maybe put him on fleece for now to stop any dust.

Hope he improves soon!

Louise

Other than keeping him warm and not in any drafts and keeping him in a quiet place I don't think there is anything else.
Hope he's okay.

Thank you for very quick replies, I feel a bit better now. I have just finished swaddling him and got a little water down him but he is not having any of it regarding food. I do have a sachet of recovery somewhere? I will try this later. Vet said the antibiotic would take a couple of hours to kick in?

You need to keep his system functioning they can get anorexia and sadly die if they do not eat over a period of 16 hours. I would feed every 2 hours. I had the not wanting to eat with my Sheltie Cuzzy too but I had to be firm and get it into him. Cuzzy did pass away eventually after 3 weeks of illness but he did have other issues.

Hopefully he will start feeling better soon, as soon as the meds start working he should start eating again, if not keep up with the syringe feeding. Keep a check on the teeth as well with not eating they will grow and that could hinder him eating.

Good luck with him! ^)

Hi sorry to hear Ozzy isnt well.. with regards to the food syringing if your mashing up pellets/feeding recover/CC i found (having had a piggy with teeth probs who i had to syringe feed daily) that either baby food such as oaty porridge dry powder for 4 months+ by heinz (mine love this) or any jar veggie food mixed in will help with the taste, Ella's kithen is also a good baby food its pure veggie's/fruit puree which comes in little pouches and tesco sell that, or you could boil a pan of veggies and blend until they are soft and try him with that.. hope that helps and gives you a few ideas to try to get him eating :)

i hope he starts to pick up for you xx

Hi there i'm so sorry to hear this about your little Ozzy 8...
a huge welcome from us in OZ too :):)
our piggie also has pneumonia, he's on baytril 0.4ml twice a day and i'm feeding him critical care, metatone (to boost his appetite) and i'm also putting a vapouriser in his room with him. He has had this for 2 weeks and his breathing is still not right so we'll have our paws crossed for little Ozzy that the meds kick in quickly for him x>>x>>x>>
If you want to chat about your piggie pm me, more than happy to have a talk with you to let you know you've got lots of people to support you :)

I agree with all the above - do try to get something into him by syringe feeding - it really is imperative that he eats.

Let us know how he gets on and all fingers and paws crossed here for you (also in Scotland).

By the way - welcome to the forum, nice to meet you.

Helen.

Agree with all the above about regular syringe feeding and regularly syringing water so he doesn't get dehydrated. Hope he's feeling better soon x

Thank you all for your lovely replies and well wishes. Ozzy passed away at 3.30 pm this afternoon:0 I tried everything I think, he was just not interested in any liquid food or water. I have never lost a piggy so quickly in all my years with piggies and I have had a few. It was very distressing his last few moments but I swaddled him in my arms untill he was at peace.

Now I have his distraught companion to think of. In the past I have introduced a young boar to a senior and always has sucess but Lemmy can be a bolshy boy and for the sake of a wee one I am not sure it will be safe. Once again thanks to you all and it is nice to find a forum dedicated to theses special wee people.

Oh I'm really sorry to hear that Ozzy passed away! It all seemed so fast. Hope Lemmy isn't too shocked and will find a new companion soon!

Awww I'm so very very sorry to read that you lost Ozzy.:( Guinea pigs can go downhill very quickly and just seem to give up the fight - it's so sad.:... At least he's at peace now and not hurting anymore.:(

Run free at the bridge Ozzy.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have also experienced that piggies can pass away so quickly, and it is so frustrating since you are just sitting next to the little thing and want to help and then there is nothing you can do!
At least you can make your piece because you know you have done everything.

8...

I'm sorry that you lost little Ozzy. Sometimes things can happen so quickly that it takes us by surprise. I'm sure you did everything you could for him xx

So sorry to hear about Ozzy 8...
