Hi everyone.

Our male guinea pig (about two and a half years old) isn’t looking good at all 😭 He’s been losing a ton of weight the last 3-4 weeks, he is so boney now and extremely underweight. There is nothing wrong with his appetite he eats a lot and they get all the food that they are supposed to (pellet food, daily fruits and veg, a lot of hay constantly available to them). We have monitored him and he eats a lot, but he keeps losing weight. He has been to the vet twice. The first time the vet just confirmed he is underweight but he doesn’t see any issues with him. Then since yesterday morning we noticed crust around his eyes and we immediately took him to a vet again, but they dont know what’s wrong and didn’t give us anything to help him. Today he seems weaker and he makes weird movements, is there anyone that could help 😭

Hello. Is there another vet you could take him to? Not all vets have experience with guinea pigs. He does sound quite poorly. I would definitely try and get a second opinion as soon as possible.

We are taking him to a different vet an hour from now, these are the best vets we could find 😭 but it seems no vets around here are specialised in guinea pigs. 😭

Good luck with the new vets. I hope they can help. Sorry I can’t give you any more advice or help, but my fingers are crossed for you.

You are doing a wonderful job advocating for your boy - it is hard when you have limited access to experienced vets.
If the vet can't find anything it might be worth asking for pain killers and a course of antibiotics to cover underlying issues like infection?
Sorry I can't be more help and good luck with everything.
Please let us know what happens as we are all here to offer support.

It is with an absolute broken and devasted heart that I inform you that our little boy is no longer with us 😞 this new veterinarian said he is in pain and nothing they can do for him now, he has to be put down to end the suffering. Wish we took him to this vet in the first place, because clearly the other vet was useless 😭 They said nothing of this sort 😭. Our hearts our broken. And I know his brother he lives with (just the two of them) is going to be absolutely broken and miss his brother with his whole heart, the two of them loved each other incredibly much we always commented on how the two of them care for each other. We will miss him so much 😞 RIP our little Skapie.

Poor Skapie. Popcorn free at the rainbow bridge. 🙁 You did all you could for him. It’s sad that vets don’t have enough experience with guinea pigs. You kindly helped him on his way. No more pain. Take care of yourself. ❤️

Popcorn free little Skapie, you will be in good company over the bridge 🌈

Please remember to take time for your own grief. And also know that the way you have been there for your little piggie is truly wonderful x

Hi everyone. I have a question at the end.. Our hearts are broken after the loss of our Skapie, but I have to think about the best interest of his brother Ash. The two of them lived together just the two of them in a cage. They had a better bond than any of our other guinea pigs. They loved each other immensely. I am scared that Ash will become depressed, is that something that happens? We cleaned the cage this morning to get Skapies scent out of the cage because we are scared Ash will still smell him and become worried and depressed. Usually when we cleaned the cage Skapie and Ash would sit together in a dome and wait. This morning when Ash was waiting in the dome he was crying 😞 probably worried about where his brother is and missing him. My question is.. What do you guys think would be best?
A. Let him stay in his cage by himself (his cage is next to the girls.).
B. Buy him a male friend hopefully similar in age (will they accept each other? Is it a good idea? Risk of fighting? Will it even help him? )
C. Neuter Ash and put him with the girls (skeptical about this for two reasons : 1. Whats the risk associated with neutering, don’t want anything to happen to him. 2. We are scared that even after neutering, that he will hump the girls the whole time and doing so make them unhappy)

No one can replace our little Skapie but unfortunately in this sad time, I still have to think of what would be best for his brother Ash. Any advice would be appreciated

B or C sound like the best options to me. Neutering isn't that dangerous and will lower the hormones so he won't probably feel like humping the girls that much. And if you do get another male instead, make sure they meet each other and make sure they get along first before taking them home together. B or C would both be good options. As long as he isn't alone, it will prevent depression and he should be happy.

And I am so sorry for your loss, you were doing everything right and did everything you could. You sound like such a good owner and he lived a great life. I hope you and Ash feel better soon.

I am sorry for your loss

I see you have also made another post on this - I have commented and added useful links for you on that new thread.

@Amberspets - Neutering doesn’t change their behaviour, it only removes the ability to cause a pregnancy, so he will still hump the girls

The first rainbow we’ve had since I cant even remember when. Positive it’s our little Skapie boy popcorning by the rainbow bridge 🌈 .Thank you so much everyone, I truly appreciate everyone’s help and advice.
