My 2 boars (both a year old) are behaving very strangely tonight.

One is chasing the other round, sniffing at his mouth and then putting his head over the other ones neck and climbing on sideways. He doesn't appear to be trying to bite him, he's not opening his mouth (2 teeth missing anyway!) but the other one is opening his mouth when he comes near. A bit of chattering from the one thats getting climbed on, but not much.

Does this sound like agression or could he be feeling a bit 'fruity'? I distracted with hay for a bit but they went back to it.

The only other thing is they haven't been out in their run much today because of the weather, so maybe just fed up with each other?

I have put one out in run and left other in cage to hopefully settle, but what do you think?!

Thanks

Sounds like an outbreak of the hormones!

You may find our boar behaviour thread and the boar guide at the top of this section helpful. How much space have your boys got?

Thanks for replies.

They have an indoor ferplast 120, and spend a lot of time atm out in a 6x4 run. They also have a 6x2 outdoor hutch.

I have now put them both out in the run, as I read on the boar behaviour link that they need to get it out of their system. They carried on for about 10 minutes, one sniffing at the other and trying to get on him, also turning around as if showing off his bottom. The other one has been raising up on his back legs a bit at him, but they are quiet. It's almost like he's just fed up. Between all this they have been popcorning and are now just nibbling the grass.

Whilst they've been out I've emptied and disinfected cage and put all new bedding in plus some new food 'toys' for them when they come back in.

Hoping they'll be ok...

They are back in now and are nibbling away at their toy creations!

Do you think they'll be ok overnight?

They should be fine, just keep an eye. Dont seperate unless blood has been drawn between them Best to try two of everything if you are having any troubles (eg two bowls/bottles/beds etc)

x.
