Our guinea pig Pixie has upper respiratory issues, vet has given her Baytril 3.5 twice daily plus Metacam. I am syringe feeding her as she is not eating much on her own. She poos and pees fine.

Vet does not have any more suggestions and says not other antibiotics can be prescribed. Any suggestions?

I’m sorry to hear she isn’t well.

How long has she been on the antibiotics? There definitely are other antibiotics which can be tried if baytril doesn’t work but baytril is the go-to.

Are you weighing her daily so you can be sure she is getting enough syringe feed?

I would recommend you also try probiotics, if you aren’t already, as antibiotics can upset their tummies. Giving probiotics 1-2 hours before or after an antibiotic dose can help settle their tummy. Better still, if she has a healthy cage mate, then making poop soup from the very fresh poops the cagemate is very beneficial for replacing gut bacteria.

Hello, we are weighing her daily so weight is maintained and I pop a probiotic in the syringe feed every time. I will try the poop soup too.
