Hey all,

I haven't been able to log on for a few days because I had a tough time getting back on here............don't know why but anyway, I had to take Ted to the vet again yesterday because his itching was getting much worse and he was starting to get scabs on his right side. He was also itching so bad that he would wheek out in pain sometimes because I guess it really got to him. :... So I made him an appointment and took him in yesterday. Well they did a skin scrapping to see if he had mites, because I thought he had mites as well as the vet. She looked at his skin under a microscope and she said she saw no mites, but possible mite eggs. So she thought the best thing to do was give him a shot of Ivermetcin. He hated that! The poor thing squealed so loud and he really, really hated it! 8... Oh yeah ted also opened up a scab yesterday before we went to the vet, so she cleaned it out for him and put some ointment on it. She said to put Neosporin on it to help it heal better. He is still itching, but not quite as bad as he was. I'm supposed to take him back in another month to get another shot of Ivermetcin. She said if this shot doesn't work, the one he got yesterday, then she wants me to take him back in a week to give him a shot of steroids. My poor little guy has been through a lot this week. Hopefully he will get better, I will keep you posted!

Sorry to hear that Ted isn't well. At least he is in good hands and the problem was identified before it gets worse. Sending lots of healing cuddles and kisses Teds way x>>x>>x>>x>>

skin scraping

first so sorry to hear about ted being off colour :(:(:( i have learnt on here that you should NOT allow your vet to do a skin scraping as there is no need for one and it is painful or irriating to the piggy. i think using sticky tape or similar works just as well. i know it was said tape of some sort as any mites or eggs would stick to the tape.
hoping ted gets better real soon:)p:)p:)p how are his legs going? sending hugs and healing vibes your way and it is good tyo have you back:rose:rose

Well, it sounds like the vet is doing all the right things.

You are obviously looking after Ted 110% . . . fingers crossed that all will go well for him and you will get his skin problem sorted.

Keep us posted xx

Oh noooooooo poor Ted he has been thru the wringer lately 8...
Sending him hugs and healing wheeeeeeeeeeeks from Duke and lots of little kisses on his cute nose and ears from me xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Tedsmama,
This is Maryh, welcome to the club of not being able to login!,my old account seems to have dissappeared into thin air.My user name has been changed to guineapigvet for some reason,I do not know what is going on.Wish the board had not been changed.

Anyway, you do need to find another vet who knows more about gps.Skin scrapes are painful to the gp and to the owners pocket, and they are a waste of time.
The symptoms of mites are scabs or sores from excess scratching, dandruff and light hair loss. The gp will sometimes lose weight.

There is no point in giving the 2nd Ivermectin in a month,it need to be given with 2 weeks to kill any mites that may have hatched after the 1st Ivermectin. In a months time these mites will have laid more eggs.
By the way,how did you sort your login problem!? it is getting tedius to have to mention in every post that I am actually Maryh

Mary you need to request a new password for the old account. If you contact Ellie she can do it manually. We've all had problems getting on. :)

Leslie, sorry to hear about Ted, hope he feels better soon. x

Hey all

well Ted seems to be doing much better this week. He is more active, itching less, and he is popcorning again, running around his cage, and wheeking tons for food and treats! :)p He seems a lot better and I think his scab is starting to heal. I didn't know that a skin scrapping wasn't necessary but she did it anyway. And when I was researching mites online it said a skin scrapping was neccesary in order to detect mites........so now I guess I'm confused.
To Maryh-
yeah I have a tough time getting on again today. It took me quite a few days to log back on again, which really sucked lol. Yeah I want to find a good vet that knos more about piggies, but where I live, there is no exotic pet vet. And right now I don't have the ags or the money to drive out of town to get Ted seen by another vet. The lady I took him to seemed to know a lot about them. Ted hasn't been losing weight or losing fur, just he had been itching so intensly and he had those scabs on his right side. About the Ivermetcin, I can see if I can get Ted in next week to have another shot done sooner, but also when I was researching Ivermetcin, it also said 2-3 shots were given within about a month of each other. I don't know, I'm a bit confused. Yeah I did sort my log in problem.

Ted is doing well, though. He seems so much happier and more active compared to last week. We will see.......I will keep you updated! ^)

ted and treatment

so glad ted is feeling better and is feeling his oats:)p:)p:)p hoping he continues to improve and sending hugs and healing vibes to ted:)p:)p and for you who have done a wonderful job with him :rose:rose:rose
perhaps ring or pop into your vet and discuss his treatment and see what they say, you can just say you are confused and need clarification.
good luck teddy boy!

Hey everyone,

well I think Ted might be getting worse, sadly. He is still itching like crazy and a few days ago I found another scab on his back....8... His other scabs are healing, finally but the one on his back is still kinda tender it seems. Parts of his skin look healthy and pink, but the areas by his scabs look all red and flaky. I also got a few pieces of furr off him the other day, nothing major just a few hairs. So I called the vet today and booked him an appointment for Thursday to have him checked out again. He might need that steroids shot now, I really, really don't want to do that to poor Ted, but it might be our only option right now. He is still eating, drinking and wheeking for his treats like normal, he's just itching like mad still. And when he can't reach an itch on his backside, he will bite himself so hard it makes me cringe when I watch him. I wish I could take him out of town to an exotic pet vet, but I don't have the gas or the money to do that. Hopefully the vets here can help him. I just wish there was more I could do for him in the mean time to make him stop itching. Well I will let you all know how Thursday goes.........

This might sound like a long shot but my cat suffers from the same problem. She has really sensitive skin and is constantly covered in scabs on her head and shoulders. After research I have done myself it seems that she has eczema. When her scabs are open I bathe them in salt water twice a day and put vaseline on them. If they are dry I just put vaseline on them and it seems to help. I know what you mean about not wanting your piggie to have steroid injections as this has been done to my cat and she is only 1 1/2 years old and I don't really want her to have them all the time. The vet even told me that skin scrapes are costly and don't usually show anything anyway. Hope this helps xx

Hey all,

well I tokk Ted to the vet yesterday and the actual big doc vet looked at Ted this time. He took a black light/fluorescent light and shined it all over Ted's back side and didn't see any mites /mite eggs. I guess that they can use that as well to detect mites. He examined Ted throughly and saw some flakiness in his skin but said his skin looked better. Ted's scabs are also almost completely healed. He gave him more Ivermetcin, only this time he gave it to him orally since they did not have enough of the shot for Ted;s weight. Oh yeah, Ted weighs exactly 2 pounds lol. :)) He seems to be doing better today. I'm taking him back in on August 14th for another check up and possbily more Ivermetcin. We also added a new addition to our pet family, but I will post that elsewhere. Just wanted to update you all!

I'm glad he got treated and is doing well.

I'm surprised the vet used a UV light - he won't see anything without a microscope if it's mites!

Well when he used the light, he turned off the regular lights and used the black lights. I dunno.....he didn't explain it really well, but he said judging by Ted's skin that he was improving and he gave him the shot for precautionary reasons. His itching isn't as intense as it was.

I am glad that Ted seems to be doing better. I hope this is the last vet visit you need for a while!
It does sound like mites but piggies can also suffer from fungal skin infection which can get confused with mites as the symptoms appear to be similar.
If he doesnt continue to improve, it is worth looking at www.gorgeousguineas.com
Chrissie is always happy to advise about her piggy friendly shampoos and melts which work wonders for fungal infections and are a lot lot cheaper than chemical filled dips etc!

Thanks a bunch! I will look into that possibly if Ted doesn't improve. I was actually thinking about ordering some shampoo products off there anyway because from what you have all said, it seems like they are awesome products! Yeah I'm taking Ted in again on August 14th for a last check up and hopefully no more vet visits, as I have to take my kitten back at least 4 more times for her booster shots. Thanks again!

Aw poor Ted! I hope his skin clears up and stops driving him crazy! Does he have dandruff at all?
Give him a kiss from us! My Jeremy has flaky skin, he's had a bath today and is now sulking!
