Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right one to post it in but it has been a busy few weeks for the piggies...

Firstly we have Butter ball...he ended up with a respiratory illness...it came on so sudden...he was sneezing...snotting and his eye (his blind eye) went bright red and lots of gunk...I started him on his baytril straight away and we contacted the vets who said to keep him warm and clean...he did for a time stop eating so we gave him critical care...he is thankfully after two weeks of treatment is back to his normal self (still blind in one eye) but now has the slight runs from coming off the antibiotics so we are carrying on with the critical care with probitoics mixed in to help his stomach...

We then have Fury who is just being his sassy self...were trying to get him used to the critical care a little at a time and the syringes jusy incase he ever needs meds...he is not a fan...he had a bit of an issue with his male bits due to getting a bit of hair stuck...but once it was off and he had a clean and his impaction sorted he is fine...although he is a long haired piggy so I'm expecting his hair to get trapped more frequent now his hair cuts are being took back a bit with winter coming in...

And lastly we have Potato...she is unfortunately having to go back to the vets...she is still pulling her fur out...but has now developed squealing sometimes when going to the loo...she is eating and being her normal self all the other times...but she has been started on some critical care just to make sure her weight doesn't drop while we wait to get her to the vets...as it isn't happening every time the vet is happy to wait till during the week...and there's no blood when she is squealing so were unsure on what it is...but we want her checked anyway...

I hope all your piggies are doing well and are having plenty of snacks and cuddles...and you all have a great weekend

Lovely to hear from you and the piggies. Sorry you are having problems with your furries, sending them healing vibes x

Butter Ball is better now...I do belive if we hadn't bought the critical care you suggested we may have lost him...although now I think he has a slight addiction to it...and fury is fine now just being his sassy self...its mainly potato right now...she is going back to the vets this week...the noise she keeps making is heart breaking...but its not all the time and other than that she is her normal bouncing self...I hope you and your piggies are doing well

Goodness me!
What time of it you’re having.
Hope all gets sorted out with your piggies.

Just about now...just potato to sort now...she is going back to the vets this week...see if we can get her some tests done and maybe some meds to help her...I hope you and your piggies are doing well

Hello. I’m really pleased Butterball and Fury are recovering well. Hope Potato gets on ok at the vets this week and they can identify what’s going on and it’s easily sorted. ❤️

Thank you, my piggies are all fine at the moment (I hardly dare say it) Ginger got over her cyst operation really well and it didn’t come back. Fingers crossed for Potato, hope you can find out what’s wrong and it’s easily sorted, they can be such a worry at times x

Hi,

Were hoping it is something easily sorted too...the last thing i want is to have to risk any surgery with her...I hope you and your piggies are doing well

In so glad Ginger got over her operation fully...and that she is on the mend...it must have been such a relief for you...and her now that she hopefully feels better she can now do zoomies and popcorning without a worry...I'm hoping it is too for potato...I hate hearing the little noise she makes...

Hope the vet can get Potato better very soon x

Hi again,

Just another update on Potato, she went to the vet yesterday and we didn't get good news. Within 20 days (she was last at the vets on the 3rd September) he could feel a lump on her left side...he belives it may be ovarian cysts...he has given us a few options...he said he will help us do which ever we decide as he wants to make sure personally that potato is oki (she apparently had quite an impact on the vet with her sass)

Option one is to leave it and just make her comfortable...when we feel we need it he will provide medication for her to make her comfortable and to stop any pain...

Option two is to drain the cyst whenever she needs it and potentially hormone injections and again when it comes to it make her comfortable

Option three to have her go in for full surgery to get spayed...but because of her age he isn't keen on this option as he is unsure is she would pull through the aftermath of her body changing...

Currently she is still her bouncy self just with bald patches from pulling her fur...she is still eating plenty of hay and fresh veg and pellets...and she enjoys some critical care as well on an evening...he did explain that some piggies can live a full life even with ovarian cysts and need little care for pain until the very end...were at odds over what to do because we want to make the right decision for her to give her the best chance possible...were struggling with what to do for her...

Sorry you have a difficult decision to make.
All I can offer is support for you.
You know Potato best and therefore you will know in your heart the right decision

Glad you have all your other piggies fine, sorry that Potato has a cyst. I hope time will help in deciding what's best for her.
I was just wondering, is there another reason apart from pain that would cause a guinea pig to pull their fur out? I wondered about the vet not giving pain relief.

According to the vet he belives it is hormonal changes because of the cyst since he can pretty much squeeze her without her squealing...she just looks at him judging him harshly for it...he said he has seen it often where they end up with a mohawk but no pain until the cyst get too big for them...

Sorry that you have to make the decision. There’s no right or wrong decision. You know your girl best.
