Recap.... about a month ago my big girl Hazel decided she just didn't like her sister anymore and took it upon herself to start attacking her. Teeth chatter, hair flying.. etc.
8I decided to seperate them to let them "cool off". Since then I have tried putting them back together twice. Within 10min each time Hazel went right back after coconut. So now they are in two seperate cages BUT... they were doing fine with floor time together and NOW that is out of the question. Hazel is even going after her on neutral ground... 8...8...
I feel like a horrible mommy and don't know what to do! I know piggies are better in pairs but I can't afford to get a third to keep coconut company and I am way to scared to introduce Hazel to another piggy...
Any adivce?? I would love these two gals to be able to get along again! 8...8...
What a shame they arent getting on. I introduced a new female (Lady Penelope) to Matilda in February after Farquhar passed away. It was successful and although Matilda is clearly the boss, they havent came to blows. My boys on the other hand! Not going there again. I still have the scars from trying to bond them.
It happens a lot less often with girls than with boys, but if one decides she doesn't want the other for whatever reason you won't be able to get them back together. For Hazel her sister is just not part of "us" anymore...
You will have to find a solution that leaves apart, unfortunately. Perhaps find a neutered boy for Hazel? That is about the most stable relationship in piggy terms. Poor Coconut should be happy with a new friend of either gender. (Provided you can afford to have four guinea pigs!)
I know how upsetting this all is for you! 8...8...8...
I am starting to feel a little better about the situation since it is bringing Coconut out of her shell! x) Over the past few weeks that they have been seperated she has become a whole new piggie in the best of ways!
She has never once greeted me when I walked into the room, she has always been the shy little girl that runs and hides in her pigloo. Now.. WOW she comes right out and is eating food out of my hands for the first time in almost a year! She runs around, popcorns and don't scream bloody murder when I pick her up anymore! So I think she is happy not being picked on all the time. (I know I would be! |) )
So I guess I'll just have to look at the bright side and continue giving them lots of TLC...xx>>>
I just need to say that single piggies can be happy piggies
Their falling-out is no reflection on your care, it's something Hazel has decided on for herself, for whatever reason, she no longer wishes to be friends & there's not a lot you can do, it's out of your hands so to speak. However, living side-by-side where they can interact with each other is just as good, if not better (esp. for the one who was bullied).
As you have seen the timid one of the 2 is allowed to be her/himself & they usually come right out of their shell, the bolshy one of the 2 is rarely bothered by living a single life.
I have single boys who've lived this way for 3 years & i've had others who altho have had to be separated have craved company & they've now got it. Piggies are so different & whilst the general opinion is to have them in pairs/groups some just don't wish to be.
