Hi all, I have recently noticed my pig's toe it looks as if the nail has overgrown into the toe itself. I can't see anything similar online so I wondered if anyone has come across this before?

Thanks in advance!

That is certainly a weird looking toe. I can’t help more but I am interested to know what the outcome is.

Hello and welcome to the forum 🤗. My Holly had a toenail like that (long time ago) and I think the rescue lady said it was fungal. Is the texture of the nail kind of brittle and flaky? I’m sorry I’m not much help, really can’t recall how we treated it. We’ll need to wait for one of the health experts xx

Has there ever been any trauma to that nail? One of my past pigs ripped her nail off where it met her foot (she got it caught in a ramp!) and when her nail grew back, it was thickened and looked similar, apparently from damage to the nail bed.

Welcome to the forum.
A vet visit is advised if you are concerned about the toe.
If nothing else it will give you peace of mind.

One of the forum health experts may be able to help, @Piggies&buns

Hiya, yes it is flakey. I took him to the vet today and she said she hadn't seen anything like that before. She seems to think it's dead skin and perhaps overgrown due to some trauma (which I can't think of what may have caused that). She was picking it off and said it's a little swollen underneath so gave him metacam for the inflammation. She didn't think a fungal treatment was necessary/wasn't sure if it was that and so may not work. I think I'll try to file it off when it's less inflamed and see what's underneath/if it grows back.

Do you know any antifungal remedies I can try without going back to the vet? Xx

Oh interesting! What did you do to sort it or is it something they live with? I took him to the vet today but she hadn't seen anything like it before and didn't think it was fungal - just dead hardened skin. I can't think of any trauma, maybe I clipped his nail a bit low in the past?

No, I’m sorry, I don’t. I think you’re probably best sticking with what your vet says. I hope the metacam helps it x
