Hello everyone, I wanted to get some advice on how I could help my pig who is still dealing with the aftermath of going into GI stasis. It’s been maybe 4/5 days since his emergency visit to the vet where he was given fluids, pain injections and a gut stimulant. They also sent me home with metacam and more gut stimulant which I’m giving him both twice a day. He’s getting critical care three times a day, about 24 ml each feeding. He’s eating more hay on his own but isn’t too interested in his pellets. He’s also getting half an infant’s dose of baby bloat medicine twice a day. His poops are still looking small, some days they look normal and others small and oddly shaped.

When will it be safe to start slowly adding some veg to his diet again? And if so, which ones would be easier on his stomach? I know he’s getting vitamin c from his critical care but I am curious if that’s enough. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thank you :)

Due to the gap in which the guts were not working properly, it can take a while for things to settle back down and yo up start seeing normal poops again.

Are you weighing him daily? It is the only way to know he is getting enough food (either through independently eating enough hay or your critical care syringe feeds). Until he is eating enough properly and it’s had time to get through the system (there is a 1-2 day delay), his poops are not going to be completely normal.

Yes I’m weighing him every morning, is there a wrong time of day to weigh him?

To add, if he is still suffering with bloat then he needs to remain off veg for the time being, only reintroducing it a few days after the bloat has ended. You can then add in very small amounts of one type - herbs are often best to start with.

Okay great, thank you so much. Unfortunately he is still dealing with some bloat, not as much as before so I’m slowly seeing some progress. I’ve also been doing tummy rubs after he takes his medications in hopes of helping the bloat medicine work to break down some of the larger gas bubbles.

I would say stop the mylicon. The active ingredient is simethicone which collects all the gas into one bubble. This can be painful for piggies to pass.

Okay, ouch that sounds painful. I didn’t know that. Thanks for letting me know. Is there another one to try or should I see how he does without it?
