Teenage Guinea Pig
Hello , i just thought it would be important to have an unsafe/unhealthy list of food items made for guinea pigs. Please be aware this is not all of the things that are unsafe/unhealthy, these are just things I picked out. Maybe this could become a sticky if it is helpful enough. Many gp owners see things at the petstore, or on online websites and many new gp owners think “oh how cool! Its made for guinea pigs so it must be safe and healthy” well, unfortunately this is not always the case and people end up buying a food item that is unsafe and unhealthy for their piggie! I hope this list helps educate new piggie owners of things to avoid buying for their piggies. All pictures of these unsafe/unhealthy food items are at the end of this message.
1. Oasis Vita Drops for Guinea Pigs
As it is pretty self explanatory, this is a droplet made to be put in your guinea pigs water so they have accsess to Vitamin C. Many people think this is a good thing to use for guinea pigs and put in their water, well no. These Oasis Vita Drops for Guinea Pigs, or any vitamin c drops for guinea pigs of that matter make the water mouldy, brown, or green and the water is no longer appealing to the guinea pig, causing it not to drink. If a guinea pig stops drinking that is a serious matter, guinea pigs need water to function properly and survive. Many people might think, “Oh well how else will a guinea pig get its vitamin c that it needs?” Well luckily, there is an alternative that can be used. To provide your guinea pig with the vitamin c that it needs, red bell pepper, leafy green lettuce, and cilantro are good, vitamin c rich, healthy veggies you can give everyday to your guinea pig to prevent scurvy.
2. Living World Berry Flavored Drops
Many people will see these and think it is a fun, good tasting treat for their guinea pig. Little do they know that guinea pigs have a hard time digesting dairy, and yogurt drops like these are very unhealthy for your guinea pig. Very sugar filled also. If these treats, or any other yogurt treats for gps are given everyday, your guinea pig could develop serious problems in the future. Fortunately, there are many other healthy, fun treats you can give to your guinea pig daily such as all of the Oxbow Simple Rewards treats, and various safe fruits and veg.
3. Vitakraft Crunch Sticks
These Vitakraft crunch sticks, or any other seed sticks made for guinea pigs, are a major choking hazard as guinea pigs have difficulty chewing and swallowing nuts and seeds. These and any other crunch sticks are also very sugar filled, which is very unhealthy for your guinea pig. If these Vitakraft crunch sticks are given, your guinea pig could possibly choke on a seed! Or have a serious tummy upset from all of the added sugar.
4. Kaytee Healthy Toppings
These papaya flavored toppings are made to be mixed in with your guinea pigs pellet food, or as a treat. These Kaytee Healthy Toppings are the complete opposit of what the tital says, they are very unhealthy and sugar filled. If mixed in with your guinea pigs pellet food everyday, your guinea pig could risk tummy upsets and are very unhealthy for him, even if only given as a treat.
I hope this list including some of the unsafe/unhealthy food items for guinea pigs helped any of you new, or soon to be owners. Or mabye even owners who already have had guinea pigs for awhile.
