We adopted a lovely black sow (We've called Millie) on Sunday afternoon for Melvin and things seem to be going good. She's had a litter before and is now spayed. She was a dominant sow who would refuse to be paired with other sows. I was told that Melvin would try to bonk her constantly for about 48 hours. Which he has lol. Millie has sprayed Melvin with pee a few times, had nose offs, warnings like she's going to bite him and kinda buck-a-roos him off when he tries to mount her. She makes a low squeaking noise which gets higher pitched when he starts. She only has to move sometimes he starts to rumble! Melvin is about 7 months old and I'm not sure how old Millie is. He also grooms her and was grooming her ears within half an hour of meeting her. She's happy to lay with him now when he just cuddles and she runs to him for reassurance when we open the pen to feed etc. The playpen is lined with towel and fleece and there is an open box that has two lowered ends filled with hay, water bottle, 2 food bowls, water bowl and a fleece blanket which was folded up but Millie decided to hide from Melvin in it so its all over now.

My question is how long should I allow them just to continue as they are? I know Melvin is over the moon about Millie I just want to make sure Millie is just as happy. Any advice is greatly appreciated

I've not got experience with bonding males and females but I would say leave them together so long as there is no fighting and Millie isn't being constantly pestered - in other words, as long as she's being given a chance to eat and relax. It sounds like it's all going well so far. :)

I would guess he will gradually lose interest in wanting to mount her after a few weeks, he will never totally lose interest and he will still have his moments, but the novelty will wear off - as with any relationship. But so long as they are not fighting then i would leave them be, she will put him in his place and he will soon learn, we have a neutered boar and 2 sows, and the boar only ever bothers with the 2 sows he knows will tolerate it, the other one he knows she wont be having any of it, so he never even attempts to mount her.

Just remember, what seems bad to us in terms of squealing and chasing is perfectly normal behaviour for them.

A Male and female bond, in my opinion is the best yet, Millie will be in charge once there settled and he will be at her beck and call!

Sounds fine to me so long as their are no major bust ups, all is well in that marriage. It's good to have 2 of everything though and places where they can chill out from one another.

Sounds like normal bonding behaviour. I would leave them be as they are and not split them now. It can often take a few weeks for piggies to completly bond with one another. But it sounds as though they are bonding ok at the moment.

I thought it was. I suppose I just wanted reassurance. He's let her be this afternoon and we've both managed some sleep lol thanks for the advice. When do I start putting stuff in like cozy and tunnels?

agree, sounds normal bonding behaviour to me

I bonded twice my 3 girls and a neutered boar, there was a lot of not now wheeking but no bust ups, after half an hour it was clear to see they were ok with each other if a little annoyed by all the advances. The second time it took a good week before the 3 accepted him enough to not worry, he was a little obsessed with my abbey but she held her own ground and a few little scuffles. I did have the disadvantage with silver that he had no guinea pig social graces so he had to learn that as well as patience but he is certainly much loved by them all. In comparison with flash who was sociable but very rumbly, they ignored the rumblestrutting a lot :))

Bumble is definately the boss of the trio, always rumbling and humping poor old Bea,who is the dominant of the two girls, yet starngely Honey the submissive one will not tolerate bumble trying to hump her at all - always pees in his face, will buck at him and sometimes turn round and show him her teeth, but when he is not trying to hump her she follows him around everywhere - !

There isnt a sticky with info regarding Boars and Sows is there? I found it difficult to find any except Finlay :S

Duh, I have actually read this thread as well. But I had wondered if there was a difference as in my case it is the female that is neutered. I will post some piccys of them both. Its just difficult *** they've both got black faces. Millie is getting very brave... she's let me stroke her head (the fact I had food in the other hand which i wouldnt let go of is irrelevant!) ha ha ha

I'm not sure Julie, there are quite a few members on here with neutered sows, I'm sure they could tell you, of course she wont have a Oestrus cycle like entire sows? So I expect Melvin wont go through the fortnightly excitement that is seen in a neutered Boar & Sows when she comes into season.

They have obviously bonded and happy to share their space otherwise you would have seen some aggressive behaviour.

why couldnt I see this when I searched? lol. Yep they're doing great. I had to move them to their cage as me and hubby are at work tomorrow so thought I'd see how they went. The pen fine but its one of those fabric ones. A few hours on their own and they (probably wont but) could escape. Thanks Pepperdog. I'm gonna get a coffee and have a read x
