Hello, just after a bit of advice and any help you may have. My Guinea pig Elf has recently lost a lot of weight he has dropped 500g over the last couple of months. I have been to the vets twice and they cannot see anything wrong with his feet, teeth, stomach all is healthy. He is not moving as much, and is just generally less active. He is able to eat still and he has been prescribed pain killers daily. Which seem to make a difference to the amount he moves but I am very concerned about his weight loss and what is causing it. Any similar experiences or advice ? Many thanks in advance.

Are you syringe feeding him a recovery feed to replace his reduced hay intake? If not, please start to do so urgently. Weigh him daily so you can know he is getting enough recovery feed in each 24 hours to stop the weight loss.

Finding out what is behind his reduced hay intake and weight loss if there is nothing obvious is going to take some investigating.
How experienced is your vet?
Do you have any other vets nearby that you can try or be referred to by your current vet?

We aren’t using recovery feed but had tried mushing up some of the pellets in water and syringe feeding but he wasn’t very impressed. Will definitely be buying some recovery feed. Where is the best place to get the recovery feed?

I’m not sure how experienced the vets is but I know the local rescue uses them. There is another vets locally that we can call and see what they say.

You can get recovery feed from pet shops or Amazon. Mushed pellets are fine to use though.

Is he still losing weight?
You need to feed as much as is necessary to stop the weight loss daily - this is likely to be a minimum of 40ml per 24 hours but the daily weight checks are your guide to know whether you’re feeding enough.

P@h is the closest pet shop which I assume will stock it?

Took him to the vets Friday and weighed him a few hours ago and he’s lost 30g since then. He is still eating hay but definitely less than he should. Will give him the syringed pellets and be more persistent.

I’ve just looked on the pets at home website and it doesn’t look like they do sell recovery feeds. I don’t use p@h so don’t know if they may have it in stores and just not online

Will have a look on Amazon and see what they have to offer. We only use p@h for the grain free nuggets.

There is a science selective one or a oxbow.

Have ordered the science selective one. Will keep trying the mushed up pellets until it arrives.
