This evening out of nowhere. Poor poppy suddenly had a bit of a head tilt. Was sitting very still and squinting her left eye completely shut. I knew instantly she had something in her eye. It took at least 5 minutes to get it out. She was quite distressed as was I. But it was gradually sinking deeper into her eye so I knew we had to get it out ASAP. Finally we pulled out a HUGE grass seed. I mean the photos don’t do this justice. It was massive. My poor girl. We got her straight down to the vets to check for anything else stuck in the eye. All clear. But she has a massive eye ulcer. The vet is quite concerned and wants to re check the ulcer on Monday. We have eye drops and metacam for her (she’s already on metacam along with many other meds for her bladder issues-she had a stone removed a few months ago and now has a post op hernia) poor girl has had a rough evening. But was greeted home by the others, snacked on some hay and is now curled up fast asleep from all the stress.
I did want to warn anyone who buys their hay from HayBox that the recent batches have contained quite a few grass seeds despite it not being typical grass seed season yet. I have been picking through the hay before filling up their trays but I obviously missed one😔 just want people to be aware of it if they purchase from HayBox too as we never normally have any issues with them.
You can see the grass seed below and in the other picture all the green marking on her eye is the ulcer 🥺 after the fluorescence test xx

Aw poor Poppy 😞 both my Ella and Esme had grass seeds stuck in their eye a few weeks ago. Both girls had huge ulcers but Ella’s had cleared up at their 3 day check and Esme’s by the forth day so hopefully Poppy’s will heal fast too x

Hi

I am very sorry; it can happen. What you are buying right now is last year's summer harvest. Hence the seed pods. Last year was a very difficult year for hay farmers with an extremely hot and dry summer.

All the best.

That certainly makes more sense thank you xx

Wow that seed is massive! I'm so fed up with hay at the minute, it's awful. I hope Miss Poppy is all better soon.

Thank you! We’ve had another girl with a seed stuck in her eye this week. Gutted. That’s 3 piggies on eye meds this week. I’m using a new brand at the moment but it must be due to the weather.

Oh your poor piggies! Hope they recover and feel better soon

I feel for you. I had three hay pokes last Autumn in just a month after my usual hay supply was discontinued and the new owner's brand did obviously not work out. :(

I would recommend that you pat down the hay so there is less risk of it getting into an eye.
