Unable To Get A New Friend Just Yet

Unfortunately, I lost Hazel the other day. Opal seems to be coping okay, though she does seem a little more skiddish than usual. She is eating though and I've been trying to give her lots of extra attention.

I've read the caring for a bereaved piggie post and my only concern is that I won't have time to find a new friend for Opal for a few weeks. On Friday I'm going camping with Brownies and then I'm back for two days and I'm leaving to visit the States for a week. My mom will be taking care of Opal while I'm gone.

I don't want to get a new friend for Opal and then not be here if anything goes awry.

In the mean time, I'm planning on getting in touch with the rescue where I got Opal and Hazel to see if they have any single pigs who might be a good fit.

But I guess my question is, is there anything that I (and my mom) can do for Opal?

First of all So sorry to hear about your loss. You did all you can, It was not your fault..

Not much really, other than giving her loads of attention.... You see the problem is we can't speak guinea pig and can't live in the cage with them, It is a good idea to contact the rescue for any single piggies looking for a friend. She may be a bit sad and more skiddish but there is nothing to worry about.

My piggie 'Gizi' lived alone for a month before we got her a friend. Since she was seperated from her 2 sisters she did hide alot but she is fine now and living with her friend 'Honey'. So yes I think she will be fine alone for a while as long as she gets more attention...

You could try giving Opal a stuffed toy to cuddle up to while you're away. It'll make her feel less lonely.

Yes that stuffed toy thing is a great Idea... My piggies have one theirself

Give Hazel a soft rag or stuffed piggy sized toddler safe toy; ideally you rub it over her so it smells right.

Give her regular attention by chatting to her whenever you pass by etc. and once she comes out of deep mourning, give her things to occupy herself with, like a hay filled cardboard box with 1-2 inch wide holes that she has to gnaw her way into.
