hi, we want to build a structure in my fab new hamster cage and also build a new structure in the guinea cage. Any advice of which wood to use? They are all chewers... Some more than others

I don't feel I am the best person to say what you can use , but can give you some pointers what not to use ...

Resinous and aromantic woods are not good for guinea pigs - e.g. , air-dried pine, cedar and eucalyptus.
MDF - as far as I am concerned . MDF is not safe because of the ingredients added to the wood.

Many forum members ( me included ) have structures made of ply wood and kiln dried pine. These woods are not ideal to be chewed , so I advise doing your best to discourage your guineas from chewing them and provide plenty of chew toys too.

Hi PiggyOwner, Many thanks for your reply, much appreciated! I do have ply in one of the cages at the moment and they seem to leave that alone but I am sure I read somewhere that it was not safe...? Re MDF yes I had heard the same.

They have lots of chew toys including apple wood but if there is some furniture to be gnawed on then they are right there...little monkeys. The hamster is the worst but she has calmed down quite a lot, early on she was a complete home wrecker, it was incredible the damage she could do in such a short space of time!
